Chester Zoo Chester 2011 #2

I am an ex-keeper, though I never worked at Chester. As Pertinax says, mothers can kill their cubs if stressed by too many people/too much noise. If news of cubs are announced too early, this can happen. I'm not saying they are right to keep the news a secret, just suggesting reasons why it might have been the case.

I went yesterday and was surprised that there was not more of a fuss. The majority of people did not seem to know about the cub. Small groups would gather but mainly just people pleased to spot a tiger. That's not to say there were no cub spotters but not a large number. I guess if & when it gets bigger & more visible there will be more attention.

Had a disagreement with a man about feeding crisps & Quavers to the dwarf mongoose, apparently not his fault as it was his small kids doing it.

Ah, the logic of the disinterested parent. Gotta love it...

OrangePerson, you are obviously aren't aware that the zoo have now got the critically endagered crisp-eating dwarf mongoose. The main reason for their decine is a lack of fresh crisps in Africa.

Interesting move, seeing as they compared them to chocolate bars in a news article after the birth of pups last year :D

This amused me! :D Thanks for cheering me up on an otherwise dull Sunday afternoon! :)

Aye, maybe the sample people who were throwing hula hoop crisps to the Elephants in the afternoon - I got a mouthful of abuse when I pointed out to them that as well as the signs requesting that they didn't do that - did they think that the elephants ate crisps in the wild?
Never mind security are very handy when you need them :) although it still feels like telling tales to teacher when you report someone :o

I think that the main problem is that mongoose from different regions require different flavours. It's a grave conservation concern. I'm glad that the general public are beginning to become more clued up on this issue.

I've said it before but I love Tsavo Aviary, the weaver birds were really busy and it's fascinating watching them selecting their weaving material, pull it out, fly back & add it to the nest.

You're right, they are great little birds to watch - I was sheltering in there during a downpour one saturday recently and even through torrential rain they were still hard at it. One was working on a brand new nest and in between getting grief from other male weavers he kept losing his grip on the branch - but never gave up. :)

Kafue Flats Lechwe and Roan Antelope were mixed this afternoon, while in the morning they were in the opposite paddocks to normal.Plenty of young birds about both in the free flight and aviarys in the Tropical Realm. Also noticed a new sign on the Pelican enclosure for Blue-winged Goose but saw no sign of them!Giant Anteater spotted again a sleep in the right hand corner of the exhibit right by the canal.

Quick Tiger cub update still no big crowds around them still again most people just happyto spot a Tiger in the heat, the zoo also had a member of staff keeping an eye on them from a distance just in case of any problems with vast crowds up setting them!!

Sounds like a good day :) - thanks for the update on the tiger cub, I'm glad that the crowds aren't drawing too large at this early stage.

I think we should get a Zoo Vigilante uniform, another Zoochatter stopped a kid harrassing a duck! :)

I've been chuckling at this image all day, what a joy!
Your not the only one I'm still chuckling at the thoughts of Karoocheetah been resposeable, but that said would be very worried if she had a Taser in her hands the zoo would not be a safe place,I know a few zoochatters that would do well to stay out of her way with one in her hands!!!
