Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2011

I believe AI was pursued in order to pass on the elderly bull Simba's genes, I would surprised if they continued this practice with Otto. However, should Emily become pregnant. I would hope they would move Otto on if there was any issue between him and the original, elderly, Flossie meaning they had to be rotated for use of the paddock and access to the main group.

Thought it was about time to start as summer has nearly gone :D

Went today!! Yes today!! during the summer holidays, at the weekend, on a very hot day!
Saw none of the above!!

Very brief visit :p Most animals were asleep! Liked the new viewing windows on the king vultures and condors, huge improvement.

Demolishment (their phrase) for the sun bear enclosure is going well.

Attached photo of very small mouse (nearest I could get to a rat for Pertinax) that was in the orangs bedroom

Thankyou. I'd be a bit worried if there were rats in there. I saw mice in the indoor area of Gorilla Kingdom at London too- active just a few feet away from a resting Gorilla.

Good to see Spotted Hyaenas back in their collection too. I'd like to see a few more UK zoos- Safari Parks even, taking on this species if they are available from Europe.

You know what Karern I was thinking it was time to start a thread for a new season that's nearly ending.:)

ummmm ok Gigit you win :D

The mouse was attracting a lot of people who needs endangered animals when a rodent will keep people entertained. (Also Rajang and Tiga were shut outside for enclosure cleaning and both sulking at looking at walls)

Goretex an early autumn thread?? :p

Great new sign up as you enter the zoo grounds (unfortunately way to many people to take a photo)

Went along the lines of 'please refrain from smoking and removing your top whilst in the zoo'
Maybe the beer bellies and moobs have been upsetting the animals from the local Essex wildlife

is it still all sweetness and light between Tiga and Rajang? Is Tiga showing any signs of maturity yet?

'Smoking and removing your top' - you can see some really unpleasant sights at Paignton now, people who seem to think going to the zoo = going to the beach. A cloud of smoke round them might help hide them from view.

I think that could be the problem then using a German Vet,to get her pregnant when a Bull Elephant would be alot better!:p:D

Surely if any otter should have no need of lubrication it's a Smooth-coated Otter? ;)

I look foward to seeing what I'm guessing is the new smooth coated otter enclosure.:)
