Good grief, it says Chester has 38,500 members, no wonder it's busy on members days! I had no idea of what the numbers were likely to be.

The 2010 annual report cites 36,181 at the end of 2010 (34,755 end of 2009, 31,256 end of 2008). There's an alarming churn rate, but the average number is on the up.

Members days are usually busy because they're (stupidly) timed to coincide with something else so this one won't be too bad. Plus, I doubt all 38K will turn up. ;)

I saw Fabi on Sunday but not Kirana!

Kirana was very much staying by the cat house while Fabi sneaked himself up to her favourite spots on the climbing frame. She did do a quick loop, stopping below the new platform and looking directly up at us.

We'll be down for members day on Sunday.

I've recently become a member of Chester, what do these members days consist of?

Hey Waddi - well the main benefits are the ability to take 12 of your F&F's (Friends & Family) in for half price.

You also get a few freebies on the way through the gate - so a free drink and a ride on the Monorail - think that's it, have I missed anything people.

There is also a comprehensive program of keepers talks throughout the day which you get a spreadsheet for on the way in again. Although if staff are elsewhere and it doesn't look like people are interested then the talk may well get forgotten.
Your usual benefits of 20% off in the restaurants & the shop still apply

Thanks karoocheetah, think I may have to pay a visit, Do I have to pre-book or anything?

not really - the zoo ask you to let them know how many guests you are taking to help them in planning apparently - but it's not really critical unless you are taking oodles of people.

I joined in 1976, the membership at the end of the year was 398, consisting of 82 patrons, 5 life members, 6 honorary members, 1 corresponding member and 304 annual members.

other facts and figures for 1976

mammals 131 species 834 specimens
birds 283 species 2155 specimens
reptiles and amphibians 80 species 206 specimens
fish 143 species 2400 specimens

visitors 932258 (1975 921045)
visitors to the Tropical house 259103 (1975 225349)
visitors to the aquarium 246450 (1975 219455)

From memory, admission to the zoo was around 70 pence.

I will be going on Sunday for my free carton of orange squash.

will look out for you x hoping o see the cheetah cubs they have been in for the last couple of Sundays :D

Cool - well a sighting of the Giant Anteater has become a personal challenge - I think the female waits until I am at the farthest corner of the zoo and THEN pops out and ponces around with junior on her back looking adorable for everyone else - I am beginning to take it personally :)

Cheetah Cubs - yes need to see/photograph them as I've been charting their progress photographically and have images every week or 10 days so far - gaps in that collection would be unacceptable :D

Then lots of other animals that I havn't visited for ages as I've been doing flying visits, so I'm really looking forward to a full day at the zoo for once!

It's members' day on Sunday and we're looking forward to seeing you all there. However, the cheetah cubs will be off-show over the weekend. They're currently receiving veterinary treatment for a viral infection and won't be out and about as normal.

from facebook page

anyone have more info on the cheetahs?

Chester Zoo have confirmed the birth of three Sumatran tiger cubs on their Facebook page

This is the first video clip of a trio of rare tiger cubs born at the zoo.

The footage - captured on CCTV cameras inside the tigers' den - shows mother Kirana and two of three endangered Sumatran cubs, born on Oct 21.

The births are a real success for the zoo and good news for the future of the species, as there are currently only around 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild.

*PLEASE NOTE: Visitors to the zoo should NOT expect to see the cubs just yet, as Kirana is choosing to raise them indoors, inside in their cubbing area.
