you and me both pete - Viral infections are nasty though and although I want them back on display soon I'd rather they were fit and healthy and giving their mum serious grief as I'm used too :)

Yep do want them to be 100% before they have to be out in the cold again
I have wondered before if big cats from warm countries are more prone to infections due our cold weather but I guess they have warm fur coats :)

In this case it hasn't really been cold enough yet for that to play a part, if temperature does indeed increase infection rates. Average temperatures can fall as low as 45°F in Ethopia during certain months, which is part of the soemmeringii range.

just for interest when I went out to South Africa last year to do some volunteer work with Cheetahs I took some photos of the Chester Zoo Cheetahs with me to compare them and one of the first thing the ranger there said was that the coats on the Chester Cheetahs were much thicker than the ones on the project.

Something else to consider is - does it matter to the animal where it's native habitat is when it's captive bred? Surely they adapt to the local conditions? So I'd say that Black Rhinos born and raised in Prague for example would find it a bit of a shock temperature wise when being released back into their native habitat after a Czech winter? thoughts?

A quick heads up - I popped in for a couple of hours this afternoon and was surprised and chuffed to see a tiger cub out in the enclosure. Mum was being very protective, and photography was next to impossible, but it is very very sweet indeed.

And very noisy too!

(apols of this is old news, I couldn't see it posted anywhere).

i'm new to zoo chat. i was at the zoo today and got some very grainy photos of a tiger cub, can anyone help me out with how to post them.

Just go to the gallery and hit the 'New Photo' button Mick.

I got some very ropey shots for the record, I won't bother uploading them :)

Delighted to see Kirana out in a den under the platform with one cub this afternoon. I'l be back tomorrow and hope to see the full set!

Some notes from today. Hopefully it hasnt already been mentioed. Don't think it has.

Cheetah cubs are still off-show
Giant Otters are also off show now whilst the building work takes place
A pair of White Collared Kingfisher have been put into what was the second Crocodile enclosure in the Tropical Realm. (poor picture attached)

Was there a sign up saying the Giant Otters had been taken off-show?

As for the Kingfishers they were moved on-show just before members day.

A worthwhile visit to the zoo today - Kirana was out with all three cubs. Very exciting.

The walkway between the Face Painting Studio and Mongoose-mania has been blocked off to stop her getting stressed.

I wonder if they're off-show in the same location they were before they went into the exhibit...
They only housed the male in that exhibit, but seeing as they have moved themI think we can safely say that they will have moved them both there,as its quite protected and out of the glare of visitors eyes,so if they do have young it will be very peacefull and secure for them!
