*after a word means sort of rare in a zoo
**after a word means rare in a zoo
***after a word means that the species is the only one in a Us or world zoo
zb, after a word stands for Zoo Baby
(#) after a word means the number of animals that are on and even off exhibit. Numbers may be wrong.
There are over 500 species at the zoo, 300 in which are on exhibit and there are over 2,000 animals total.
Also just because there is number of animals at the zoo doesn't mean that all of them are on exhibit.

what a fantastic list and thanks for all the hard work that you put into putting it together. My only question is where is ED'S Giant Chinese Salamaders. They were by far the ulgyest animal I had ever seen, but yet he was the proudes of them.

I have not heard of such species at the zoo, you must be thinking of the time that they had the Amphibian House in the now 4-D theater.

You're mistaken.... The 4-D Theater was the Ape House and then an event hall ;) The Chinese Giant Salamanders were in the Reptile House. They had problems with the tank leaking and they were often off exhibit. I'm not sure if they still hold the species behind the scenes, but they are no longer on display. Quite impressive, yet rather "ugly", creatures. I was always quite fond of them.

So that's what that empty exhibit is in the Reptile House. Are you sure that it wasn't an Amphibian House? I remember seeing a giant mudpuppy, and a bunch of toads.

The old Ape House did house an temporary exhibition on amphibians called "Frogs" back in 2001(?)

The Chinese Giant Salamanders have been gone for quite a few years, so the empty exhibit in the Reptile House was home to something else.

Gerenuk beat me to it. I was going to say that I believe there was a special exhibit there, but it was never an "official" amphibian house. As for the exact time it was there, I don't quite remember, but 2001 sounds about right.

It was only a special exhibit, similar to the Australian exhibit that was in the Children's Zoo back in the mid 2000's. It wasn't an "official" amphibian house. If you read closely, it says "traveling" exhibit, which is what it was.

Edit: I see you realize that now. We posted at the same time.

Thank you for such a thorough research! I especially appreciate the Insect lists, since whenever I think of this zoo I immediately remember this fantastic exhibit complex first!

Dragons!
*Ackies dwarf monitor**

Species name is actually Ridge-tail monitor, ackie is a hobbyist's name for the sp. Also they are a species that is being kept by many hobbyists so surley zoo's must be getting a few so ** seems a little extreme?

However, this doesn't detract from what is a brilliant and well constructed list!

I know but the zoo has gotten me used to saying Ackies, the zoo says a lot of false facts about their animals. Such as telling us that a Sichuan takin is a takin at the zoo Ans website. Anyways thanks for the compliment.

Besides dman, what does everyone think, after spending 9 hours on it?

Well done, you deserve great credit for that mighty piece of work, the only improvement would be the number of specimens of each species. :):)
I have followed the progress of the Sumatran rhinos at this zoo for many years.

Thank you very much!! I was thinking about doing the number of species but now that you say it would be an improvement I will.

I have done about 80% of the list showing how many of the individual species are at the zoo. I will do the rest either tonight or tomorrow.

What happened to the zoo's male okapi?

No clue, it had to have left when Lisala Li got pregnant with Kuvua because I have never seen a male okapi at the zoo. I'm just wondering what happened to the yellow-backed duiker.
