Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2012 #1

I don't think it's been mentioned sorry if it has but 2.2 Dwarf mongoose have arrived at the zoo. The two females came from Emmen and the males Helsinki.

Sorry just a little bit confused! Are the binturong and warty pigs in the enclosures built for river hogs and Diana monkeys on the old White rhino house? And if so where ate the river hogs? :)

This is correct. The binturong are in the section of the enclosure once occupied by Diana monkeys. The river hogs are now, if i recall correctly, in the old bush dog enclosure down from the penguins, but I am unsure as to where the Diana monkeys may have moved to.

It is sad to hear of the passing of Ricky, but he did reach a fine age :)

Thanks tlDave :) so the aardwolf are moved back to the complex with the marbled polecats etc! They certainly keep things on the move!

As far as I am aware, the aardwolf never left the bear/golden cat/aardwolf/polecat complex.

Sofus the sea lion will be moving to Lodz zoo next month. His current enclosure will house in total 30 Northern rockhopper penguins. (11 are arriving from Vienna)

Just a question - are the rockhoppers normally kept in their smaller enclosure sometimes used for young gentoos, or are they usually kept in the main exhibit? Was their breeding more successful when separated from the other species? Difficult to tell I know, with the drift towards males in some captive penguin groups over time, but I'm interested to know historically how Edinburgh has done with rockhoppers and macaronis (I'm aware they no longer keep the latter). I've known humboldts to disturb rockhoppers and prevent them from nesting, are gentoos similarly disruptive?

I too am interested in how sensitive the new inhabitants of the sea lion pool will be to water quality - I'm assuming that either there just isn't money to put new filtration on this pool, or that a relatively inexpensive system can be installed for penguins but not pinnipeds.

What's Viennas secret?

They are sometimes kept in the small pool when they are breeding. Normally right at the top where it's hard to see them. I think I read in a earlier post that be ause the seals poo is solid it causes a problem with the filter. Whereas penguin poo is more liquid.

I watched the Panda programme last night (very interesting but that's for the T.V. thread) and have been meaning to ask for a long time- what is that tall 'spaceship' thing on the Penguins' side of the Panda building? I've even seen it myself in the past but have never known what it is.

I think that the bridge across the penguin pool is suspended by wires from this tower; which doesn't explain why it's shaped like a deformed modernist kitchen appliance or painted such a dodgy colour

It's supposed to represent the prow of a ship in reference to Christian Salvesen as they provided the founders of the existing penguin colony and it's really why penguins have been at Edinburgh for so long as Salvesens used to regularly return to Leith docks in Edinburgh after trips to the southern oceans where they "collected" the penguins. There is a plaque on that part of the bridge at the penguin enclosure.

Thanks. I knew about the Christian Salvesen connection with the penguins, but not about the 'ship prow' structure. Is it just me or is it grossly out of proportion- it is simply HUGE!
