How long has the male sumatran tiger been at Chester?
I found a picture that I took in January 2010 it looks like a different tiger not sure tho its bugging me !
:)

the species that really surprised me when I first saw it was the Cape clawless otter (not much smaller than Chester's giants).

Another one for me was Sea Otter- MUCH larger than I imagined.

(Sorry to others for brief digression from Chester news. My perk.:D )

A few notes from today's visit...

Sloth are now on show, and that side if SoTJ (as it is still named) is now complete bar the Agouti - which are both on site - and the cinema room, which, so it would appear, just needs opening. The whole ranch effect really works, with the species - barring those in the fish tank - signposted with "Atençao" (Attention) signs for each of the mammalian species. The savannah side is really excellent, including the fish tank, which is full of activity - with hundreds of Tetra (with Penguin, Lemon, Cardinal, Black Neon, Bleeding Heart, and Rummy-Nose amongst the species signposted) alongside Turtles and Discus Fish that I spotted - the booklet of fish species also featured rays and Angelfish (no notebook on me so couldn't take note of species, unfortunately).

The Giant Otter house, though not used by the Otters whilst I was there, looked superb.

The Aardvarks were, predictably, asleep. They were not using their 'official' den, though the Meerkats seemed to rather like it.

Bush Dogs, meanwhile, were being very proactive and were removing all of the ice from their pool, despite how cold it was.

The sloths are indeed on-show, with the female investigating new areas of the space. We saw the giant otters in the underwater viewing and it does look excellent, although the planting inside doesn't look as though it'll last the week. It's really worth climbing inside the viewing bubble no matter what your age or size (there are no signs restricting it to children) as the otters are quite amazing up-close.

The black howlers were outside and look good.

Just had a look on the Zoo's Facebook, there is a photo of Boelens python- looks at though there on-show.

They are indeed, and they look absolutely superb! Very active today, which combined with their fantastic appearance made for a brilliant exhibit.

Some herpetological notes from today:

1) The white-lipped viper enclosure in Realm of the Red Ape is currently empty, don't know if they will return or a new species will come in as there seems to be a shuffle around in there recently with regards to reptiles.

2) 'Life on the Lily Pad' is being stocked up, but apart from caecilians it appears that the species are going to all be different. There is a Sambava tomato frog in one enclosure, and there is a sign for Black-eyed leaf frogs on the other one.

3) Only saw two Boelen's pythons which fits with what Richard said, but there could have been a third that I just couldn't see.

4) The turtles in the Spirit of the Jaguar tank are Yellow-spotted Amazon river turtles (Podocnemis unifilis).

Can't think of anything else that I observed with regards to herps, same really for mammals and birds.

Very nice!- A.K.A Morelet's Tree Frog;).

As it is - I've just used the name that the sign on the exhibit uses - looking forward to seeing these, though I will miss the mission golden-eyed tree frogs if they don't reappear on-show somewhere in the zoo.

They are a very nice species, Isn't Chester only one of two [three in Europe?] to hold these species?- Anyway, still a very interesting piece of news.

Looks like I'm probably wrong then - must have seen the same one twice whilst I was busy taking photos of one.

Well i had a good day today at the zoo.I saw the Ardvarks and the Sloths.I was surprised the sign for the sloths was not very visable.I knew where to look or i would not have seen them.people were more taken looking at the fish tank.

It has now been confirmed by the Zoo that the two Cheetahs Adeaza and Matrah have been "introduced" and it is going very well and count down now is 97 days with a bit of luck.Well done.

I was surprised the sign for the sloths was not very visable.

A visitor at the weekend was insistant that it was Attenkohs in the exhbit, not Sloth. Bizarrely, the Agouti sign is significantly bigger than the Sloth sign but I suppose that fits with the whole 'modest ranch' idea.

What's an attenkoh?
