Blackbrook Zoo (Closed) Blackbrook Zoo 2012

Two of the Colchester females were born at Blackpool, the male was born at Manor House in 2007. Cotswold have bred a few Chapman's. I think YWP have pure bred Chapman's there from Cricket St Thomas, plus two males from Marwell and Africa Alive.

In that case Colchester's are all descended from the Bristol group, which later went to Blackpool and finally to Manor House. So pure Damara too.

Cricket's pair looked like pure Chapmans. So do Africa Alive's.

Believe that YWP are holding bachelors. Didn't Whipsnade have a male Damara? (Or two?)

Don't forget the Damaras as Black Isle. I think their original animals originated at Blackpool and have since (in)bred.

Whipsnade had two different male Chapman's(not Damara). One was the original Marwell stallion- when he died he held a record for longevity. The other came much more recently- source unknown but he is(or was) a Chapman's too. Did it go to the lady in Wilitshire who keeps surplus males? What type are hers?

Paradoxurus- If the Black Isle Damaras are from the ex Bristol stock too, it means apart from the putative ones that were at Blackbrook, the other now in UK are all descended from that one Bristol group import.

In one of the small 'snapshots' in the article, one of the females does appear to have unstriped legs but difficult to see properly from the angle. Perhaps it was the male which had the untypical fully striped legs.

The male never arrived at Blackbrook if had arrived he would have come from Tiergarten Heidelberg, the two females arrived from Gaia Zoo in the Netherlands.Hope this helps you out about where they all came from!

The lady in Somerset currently has 1.1 Boehmi-type zebras, 1.0 Chapmani-type zebra (which is not the Whipsnade one) and 2.0 Somali wild ass onsite.

The two female Zebras came from the Netherlands doesn't say where from, the article below also says that they were expecting a male named Marvin in 2011.

Very many thanks to both of you for the information about the source of these zebras.

I had a look at the various shots of one or both the Blackbrook 'Damara' females that are in Gallery. Both of them have stripes on the legs, one more heavily so than the other. Neither look much like classic Damaras with the broken and patterned rump stripes and unstriped legs, but then Damaras do vary considerably in their degree of striping, some more resembling Chapman's.

So they could still be classed as Damara I guess.

Blackbrook and Somerset zebras

Hello, it is 'the lady in Somerset' here! My zebra at Knowsley came from Port L and was originally from Longleat.
There is no current studbook for Plains zebras within Europe at the moment, but I'm working on it! I have to try and get the Equid TAG to agree there is a need for an ESB or a monitor.
When I get the time I will be providing Axe Valley with their historic data and several other collections too.

hi. Sorry I called you the 'Lady in Wiltshire'- wrong county.:D

Have just got back from a very different visit to Blackbrook Zoo,the collection closed today at 5.00 pm as normal and then re-opened its doors at 6:30pm until 10pm,myself and bongorob took the chance to visit after a busy day of zoo visiting at Chester.First up the staff where their normal extremely helpfull selves that any regular visitor to the place will already know,iy was very interesting to see birds like the waterfowl, that are normall a hive of activity bedding down for the night, while things like the Ibis and Cranes where very much taking the chance to get some last minute feeding in before sunset, the biggest difference was the chance to see the various owls within the park, very much active and making themselves heard about the place.I have to say that anybody that knows the park will not be surprised to hear that while the sun was not set the place was still warm enough to be walking round in a t-shirt,but as soon as the sun had set the temperature dropped very quickly.I very much hope at somepoint in the future they do this again as it was, very nice to see the place in a very different light setting and seeing activity from many of the animals that you just wouldn't see ina normal zoo visit.

Really sorry if Blackbrook is in trouble always thought it was a good collection witha real future, hope it can turn things around

If they were to use the large entrance building as a cafe, and the small cafe as a shop, they might make more money. Much as I love the place it can be seriously chilly and a place to get a warm meal under cover would be most welcome.

A few quick snippets from a very cold visit to Blackbrook, the Blackbuck have now left the collection, sorry forgot to ask where they have gone!Arrived early this morning was 2 female Goliath Herons from Beekse Bergen in Holland, they will be held inside the Lemur House until the warmer weather next year.Nice to see this species return the collection after a gap of over 18 months. Also they are hand rearing a young African Spoonbill.
