Chester Zoo Chester's Elephants

On many of my recent visits to Chester Zoo i have noticed that Upali (the bull) has been out with the females. Does anyone know if any of the elephants are pregnant?

Upali has been out with the main herd for a few months, don't know if there's any pregnancies. The only female that could get pregnant would be Jangoli, unless Sundara takes after her mother and breeds at a young age.

Elephants usually have a three-two year interval before breeding again (so after the two year pregnancy the initial calf is around 4-5 years old). I think the zoo would try to get as many of the cows pregnant as possible since (as announced else where on the forum) that Upali will soon be transferred to Dublin.

Jordan-Jaguar you are wrong, elephants usually give birth every 3-5 years, meaning a female can get pregnant again when her last calf is just one year old. Under good conditions in a zoo it can sometimes - rarely - even be faster. Sithami could totally be pregnant again by now and Sundara, who will be 8 this year, could be too. Zoo born females often start cycling at age 4 and can have their first calf at age 6 - sometimes even a bit earlier.

Thanks, I did mean that the calf would be six when she next give birth.

Why could it only be these that could be pregnant, when they have 4 that could become pregnant,I think you are doing a bit a very serious guessing again.

Elephants can get pregnant soon after they have given birth.
Htoo Kin Aye from Emmen for exemple. Between her first two youngsters are 29 months, and between her fourth and fifth young even 26 months.
She last gave birth in march 2010 and is due this spring.

And to get back on topic. I heard that Sitami is pregnant again. And possibly also Thi Ha Way.

I hope this isnt more speculation. As speculation leads to wrong information being passed around.

Where exactly did you hear this. If you are going to make a statement like this you should really back it up with some substance. Chester don't like people spreading rumours and rumours have damaged their relationship with zoochat in the past.

Just visited Chester's website and it states that they have 8 elephants in their herd. I am sure I have seen more on previous visits in the past. Does anyone know the highest number of elephants they have had at any one time?

I also noticed that it states this

Habitat: Scrub forest and grassy terrain.

What about rainforest?

At the moment - as far as I'm aware - Chester's elephant herd is as follows:
Upali
Jangoli
Maya
Thi
Sithami
Sundara
Nayan
Jamilha

So eight :)

They've held at least ten Elephants at one point, the one's I can think of are:

Upali
Sheba
Sithami
Sundara
Thi
Maya
Jangoli
Raman
Birma
Tunga

I can't think of the other one, was Chang one?

It's been said on the Dutch zoosite forum by a member who knows a lot of inside information on elephants in european zoos.
If he sais something, you can bet it's true.

Olifantennieuws buiten de Benelux
Not disputing that the info might be correct, but the only info source I believe for news as to what is fact at Chester,is the Zoo its self and they haven't annouced anything yet,so as far as I concerned all this is at the moment is rumour!
