As reported on the main Twycross 2012 thread...

Twycross have confirmed this morning that Asian Elephant, Tara gave birth to her first calf at around 3am on 25th March... Sadly the calf was stillborn :(

The calf was conceived in 2010 using AI..

My thoughts are with all the staff at Twycross over this sad event :(

Although it is very sad, it isn't unusual for first time mothers to have complications in their first birth. Through this bitter sweet event, we can expect many more HEALTHY & LIVE calves in the future from Tara. My condolences to the Twycross zoo and its elephant management team.

Very sad to hear this. Yesterday i checked the webcam and thought the girls were acting different, staying together and up by the house alot of the time. Also around half 2 when the 'display/feeding' usually happens, the keepers only came out to them and didnt do it - now its clear why.

My condolences to all at Twycross zoo, and the best of luck for future attempts.

Hi, I am very confused right now!

I noticed this yesterday also. I even started worrying about them, because they seemed so forlorn almost. I was pretty annoyed that they werent allowed back in, thinking they were just too hot or something. I also noted that the keepers came out, but didnt do the training. But what we did notice was that one elephant seemed to be getting more attention, and we wondered if this must be Tara. The guy checking her over had her lie down, and I was thinking that cant be Tara, surely they wouldnt be A. making her do tricks, or B. examining her outside.

And then today, they were not our for most of the day, just a few minutes it appeared and doing some training, but I cant say if all four of the girls were out. The thing I am most confused by is, all the reports are saying the little baby calf was delivered at 3am Sunday morning, but if that was the case, why were they all out yesterday, and then not out at all today? And why is the news just breaking now? Did they mean delivered in the middle of Sunday night, early hours of Monday??

Can anyone clarify please? Als, I was convinced that Emmet was her dad, is there any confirmation of who he is please?

Really stunned and upset about Tara losing her calf, so saddening for the lovely Ele family she has.

Father is Raja. I watched the webcam this afternoon, I did see all four females outdoors for around three or four minutes.

Thankyou, yes me too, but I still dont get why they were out for most of the day yesterday and then hardly at all today. I mean I fully support them NOT being out today, but i`m upset that they were out yesterday when they clearly looked like they didnt want to be.

In a way it is a relief that Raja is the dad, because people keep saying Emmet`s had six calves who have died, and its very worrying.

Thanks for your reply

I wasn't aware quite that many had died, I knew there were Donaldson & Lee-Lee, possibly one earlier at Whipsnade too I remember reading about, and the one who died at Twycross last year. Where were the others born? Is Euan (Whipsnade born) his only surviving offspring?

Emmett has had four of his calves die (including Ganesh Vijay at the Twycross zoo). Three pregnancy's he sired resulted in still birth (all coincidentally to first time mothers, similar to Twycross' situation). Emmett also has five living calves: Euan, Gabi, Donna, George, and Scott.

Who is Gabi? I don't think I have heard of that one.

Thank you both for your replies. Sorry, I worded my question wrongly, I should really have said longest surviving offspring or only one to reach (sub) adulthood.for some reason I didnt really think of the three youngsters ive seen twice in the last month!! It must be due to the late hour! I managed to get the info I wanted though, thanks

Who is Gabi? I don't think I have heard of that one.

Gabi is a seven year old male Asian elephant who was born at the Jerusalem zoo through artificial insemination (with Emmett as the sire), he now resides at the Gaziantep zoo in Turkey where he is living with another young male.

Thanks for that, I wasn't aware that he had sired a calf at Jerusalem, pleased to hear he is doing well.

And thank you Jordon for this information, that's something I have learned today.

Not a problem, I have listed below calves sired by Emmett including ones that have either died or were stillborn.

2002 two stillborn calves born (Whipsnade)
2004 2.1 one still born, Euan and Aneena (Whipsnade)
2005 1.0 Gabi (Jerusalem)
2007 0.1 Leelee (Whipsnade)
2008 1.0 Donaldson (Whipsnade)
2009 1.1 Ganesh Vinjay (Twycross) Donna (Whipsnade)
2010 1.0 George (Whipsnade)
2011 1.0 Scott (Whipsnade)

Donaldson, Leelee, Aneena and the three still born calves died at Whipsnade. Euan is in Spain (Sevilla) as already mentioned. Ganesh Vinjay died at Twycross in 2011.

George, Scott, Donna, Gabi and Euan are his only surviving offspring.
