Notes from today:

- 3 Visayan Warty Piglets were born a week and a half ago. There are following their mother everywhere and appear very healthy! :) Due to this the cattle house is closed, but the piglets can be seen in the paddock closest to the okapis.

- 2 Scimitar Horned Oryx have been born. Both were suckling well and appeard healthy and content.

- Sibu appears very content on his island and I managed to get some shots of him on his climbing frame.

- The Croc pool looks excellent, very well planted, deep, clean water. Everything except the crocs ;) they will be moving in some time in the next couple of weeks.

- I didn't see a hornbill in the elephant house...

- The Writhed and Wrinkled hornbills in the tropical realm are both nesting (may have already been posted)

- The female warthog has been closed inside now and the mongoose have been given a temporary shelter.

- The cheetah enclosure is fantastic! Only two were on show and there was still construction going on in one paddock (the viewing dome).

- All the hoofstock are back on the Asian Plains and it is starting to look good again.

- The baby babirusa looks healthy and was running around the wood-chipped paddock with it's mother. The male was still seperated in the grass paddock.

- The baby giraffe is still off-show.

- Didn't see the bengal tigers at all and Kepala seemed outdoors all day (perhaps they've been moved on now...)

- No sign of construction starting for the African Aviary or the Hornbill aviary.

- The framework for the butterfly house looks near complete.

I have plenty of pictures and some videos which i will post links of soon...

Great news on the births, The male scimitar horned oryx must of grown up a bit then! :D

Is the Visayan Warty Pigs, a first for the UK?

The keeper who i spoke to, said that they were a European first (but I though Blijdjorp had bred them... probably wrong though)

I knew they were definitely a UK first.

The Cheetah exhibit I feel is amazing and like you have stepped into a whole new different zoo.

Does anyone remember or know the cost of the cheetah exhibit?

Where are the babirusa these days? By woodchipped paddock are you meaning the little one behind the okapis? Have they, or are they, moving upto the ex-cheetah, ex-serval pudu paddock at any point?

Yeah behind the giraffe house. It's an acceptable size enclosure for something the size of a babirusa, but it was only suitable on a temporary basis for an okapi sized animal...

There is two paddocks behind the giraffe house, one grassed, the other woodchipped.

I have no idea when they are moving, last I heard, they were getting their old enclosure back and the Warty Pigs are getting a new one near to Islands in Danger...

I wish that all keepers would keep abreast of their field of operation. The Visayan warty pig EEP was started by Rotterdam (2-3 pairs) and Poznan Zoos (1 pair). Rotterdam Zoo was the first to breed the Negros subspecies in Europe, followed by Poznan Zoo. The current European population includes 5 zoos (Apenheul, Chester, Edinburgh, Poznan and Rotterdam). Colchester is to follow or has already received some.

Is this kind of miscommunication common, it just looks bad when inaccuracies are bandied about. It makes the zoo world look stupid (undeservedly so). Why cannot the curator do the business then and inform his keepers as to the ins and outs of their charges? :(

Sorry, will stop the rant there! :D

What will the situation be with the cheetahs, they are getting 6 aren't they? Will the males all be in one paddock and the females in another? Won't they associate each other as siblings as cheetahs often do in captivity if either kept together too often, or are in close visual contact?

What will happen when they are attempting to breed them, as females prefer to be on their own and choose a mate out of a selection? How many paddocks will the cheetahs have anyway? Are the cheetahs all going to be used in the proposed breeding programme or just a single pair? Any one know ages of the cheetahs?

There is a plan in the gallery somewhere.

Basically there will be five paddocks two large ones and 3 smaller ones behind

Coming from the Asian plains, over the bridge, on the right is one smaller exhibit and on the left is the the two main exhibits. The other smaller pens are behind the main enclosures....

I wonder if this means that when the zoo pairs up the animals for breeding, they will be given a seperate enclosure each?

Sibu.

I see Sibu is back at Chester. Anyone know what the future holds for him now?(i.e. where might he go next?)

It was mentioned on here awhile ago, that chester are going to try and find him a female companion. Then move him on to another collection so that they can complete phase two of the Realm of the Red Ape

The stock was quarantined at Poznan, which I think bred them for the first time in Europe. Rotterdam have bred them, so it is just a UK first at Chester.

Just remembered a couple of non-animal updates:

- *ecko unltd (which sponsors the Indian Rhinos) have temporarily donated a large charging rhino statue, which is outside the Asian Plains. It will be auctioned and the funds will got to the zoo. (this may be on the website, i haven't checked it in a while)

- Also in co-operation with Ecko, the zoo is giving out leaflets to visitors which allow them to enter a competition which allows them to go on a VIP, after-hours, behind the scenes tour of the whole zoo!

Great video's, the one with the cheetah's is great with them playing.

In the piglets one you can here someone telling someone all about the warty pigs, was that you?
