San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2012

But that doesn't explain the maned wolves, koalas, steenbok, and wallabies there.

Koalas and wallabies are temporary....maned wolves can be lumped into EO. Like I said, I would be surprised if that was their intent, but honestly, it wouldn't be the weirdest thing they've done.

"A few things i learned on the Sunrise Stroll this morning" the zoo received 10 gharials last Wednesday, they are on exhibit on Tiger Trail,
they are planning to display fresh water crocodiles in the old gharial exhibit on Reptile Mesa,
Reptile Mesa is scheduled to open on the fourth of July weekend,
the jaguar cubs are a boy and a girl, both are up to 5 pounds,
the elephants from the Reid Park Zoo are still not on exhibit as Connie can be a bit "moody"

Haven't heard of them using Kagu in keeper talks, but there are some on display in the aviary you see while waiting in line for the bus, and in the "secret" line of aviaries south of Polar Bear Plunge.

They still have the Tree Kangaroos on exhibit even with the construction. Both otters are on exhibit. Spotted neck in the Ituri Forest and the cape clawless in the Asian Passage. Adhama was HUGE when I saw him in April! Betsy can probably answer your other questions! :)

Thanks for the update Betsy. Glad to hear the gharial import happened. Interesting that they are going into Tiger River, I would imagine they are all quite young.

I have just heard that the Parker Aviary has been transformed into a South American themed aviary and now houses capuchinbirds and the zoos Andean CotR.
Can anyone elaborate and provide a species list?

This was always my favourite part of the zoo as most visitors walked past the entrance it was always so tranquil.

On that note does anyone have current species lists for the Owen Aviary?
Thank you

They only other question I can answer without checking is the pangolin talk is at 1:30 in the children's zoo. i will check on the other questions when I am there Thursday.

The gharials are all between 3 to 5 years old. I understand they are too young to sex. The zoo's agreement says we will keep all 10 for a year and then they can be shipped to other zoos.

The zoo received a male African Wild Dog. His name is Manny, not sure what zoo he is from. He is joining the older female named Wanda. According to the bus driver, mating has been seen. Fingers crossed for lots of pups.

The exhibit they're in right now couldn't hold babies! Where would they put them if they had pups?

There was an extremely old one in the old Chinese leopard exhibit, but that's where the Amur leopards are now I thought.

They are in one of the old (horrible) exhibits on Park Way. What I used to call Dog and Cat Canyon and is now called "Africa Rocks". I believe it used to house hyenas. I thought the female was too old to breed but I got my information from a bus driver. If I see a keeper in the area I will try to get more information.

All of the Safari Park's bonobos have been transferred to the zoo. Should be interesting couple of weeks as introductions are attempted.
