San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2012

I received a "request for donation" letter for Reptile Mesa, I thought I would share it with you. "I am excited to let you know that a new era for our frogs, turtles, and native reptiles is under way at the San Diego Zoo. For decades, most of these unique and charismatic creatures have lived on Reptile Mesa in aging terrariums located inside bungalow-type building that were built in the 1960s. But soon, with the help of members like you, three new exhibit areas will be created as part of an innovative revitalization of Reptile Mesa. New glass-fronted, temperature-controlled homes will be built for our turtles, frogs and other amphibians, and native reptiles---including rosy boas, desert iguanas and great horned lizards. In addition to experiencing over 35 different species (more than ever before on Reptile Mesa) visitors will also enjoy better viewing thanks to new covered walkways and the many special opportunities to stop and appreciate the animals along the way. More living space..lush landscaping...natural lighting....improved water quality....and state-of-the-art air filtration systems will be provided for the animals, many of which are rare or endangered. Plus, special nesting beaches for turtles and a shimmering pond for Chinese alligators will be featured for the first time! Also inside the envelope were pictures of a few of the animals...Roti Island Snake-necked Turtle...Mexican Giant Tree Frog...Desert Iguana...Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko...Red-headed River Turtle...Blue Poison Frog...Kaiser Newt and a Tomato Frog. I have heard they are trying to have it completed by Night Time Zoo which is some time in June.

I hope for your sake they get it finished in time. I am afraid if they don't you won't be able to see the galapagos tortoises either as they have that whole area blocked off. I hope you were not counting on seeing the koalas either because they are off exhibit until next year. But there is still a lot of animals to see. Have fun!

I wish there was, but no. :(

According to the zoo's Facebook page there will be a temporary exhibit for the koalas across from the 4D Theater. It was also said that two of the three females have joeys.

are these animals on exhibit out there? pangolin

If you want to see the pangolin make sure that you go to the 1:30 PM keeper talk in the children's zoo; it's the only time that it is brought out in public. You might want to check with someone at the children's zoo to confirm this, but it was the case as of March 2012.

I wonder if they are maybe converting the ex-gharial exhibit to Chinese alligators? They mention "nesting beach" which that exhibit certainly has.

I was guessing the same thing.....

I can remember--before the Klauber buildings--when the north side of the mesa was lined with a vast series of small pens and pools with a huge assortment of turtles

Betsy did a good job of listing animals at the zoo. Several of the antelope you mentioned are not at the zoo but are at the Safari Park. I assume since you are coming all the way out here you will do both? Since you mention arctic wolf I will tell you there is a wolf center in the foothills east of the Safari Park. I have never been, but based on their website it looks decent (not 100% positive if they have white arctic wolves though). The SD Zoo used to have a white wolf in one of their shows and I think they sometimes put it in an exhibit on the old elephant mesa (where they rotate some of their larger performing animals).

They used to have both mishmi and sichuan takins on exhibit, but these days I believe it is only sichuan. They may have some mishmi in the off-exhibit large hillside enclosures behind Elephant Odyssey, which you can view from the Skyfari ride (binoculars would help).

I do not know if they have tamandua, but if you want to catch a one hour nonstop flight on Southwest from San Diego to Tucson (often $69 each way), I can arrange for you to pet a tamandua at Reid Park Zoo (really). We also have the spot-necked otter you mentioned as well as marbled polecat, which is closely related to the european polecat you mentioned.

According to the newest member magazine of the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound, the three juvenile amur leopards they were temporarily housing for San Diego were sent down on March 7. Since that was about 30 days ago, I assume they are just now ending quarantine. Not sure if they will go on exhibit somewhere at San Diego Zoo or remain off exhibit for awhile.

They are renovating the old Chinese Leopard exhibit for them. I will take a picture as soon as they are on exhibit. Thanks for the compliment of "a good job'.

San Diego Zoo has posted about Reptile Mesa on the Donate portion of their website. Pretty much the same information betsy posted. Although from this I feel fairly confident that the Chinese Alligator exhibit will NOT be the former gharial exhibit.

Turtles & Frogs: "Hoppiness" is a New Home

An ADA accessible pathway overlooking a canyon? Meaning the bus tour/service road? Fun.

As I recall, there were some very steep (non-ADA accessible) slopes into and out of some of the Klauber buildings. Presumeably, this is what will be fixed in this new project.
