Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo news 2012

I do not think so but the gorilla Ramar is in that exhibit and in the member magazine it said with some monkey companions. Also Tropic World Africa will be closed till further notice i asume because they are introduceing JoJo to the 3 female gorillas.

The alligators where moved to a facility in Florida. I'm not sure where exactly. I have no idea where the Orinoco Crocodiles came from.

In other zoo news. The zoo had a baby Bison born on May 16th.

Finally! I was just wondering when if the bison were going to breed plus they have such a nice enclosure even though the grass is starting to die and they started to put hot wire up.

I'm assuming that the orinocco crocodiles were sourced from DWA (Dallas World Aquarium) Which is the only North American facility breeding the species

When I went to Brookfield Zoo last sunday I walk past the far left rhino exhibit and saw a rhino running outside I ddo not know which one it was though. I only saw one of the three outdoor exhibits ocupied but it was very hot outside and I did not go inside but I suspect that there were more inside. They rencently converted the old elephant exhibit into another rhino exhibit so maybe they are getting ready to breed again.

That's so strange. They had a pretty nice outdoor exhibit (minus underwater viewing). The paychderm paddocks are already getting bare, I wonder what they plan to do with this area.

Perhaps getting ready to start their Elephant expansion?

Team Tapir

I was thinking that, but the black rhinos have a yard still - and getting a new one to breed, it doesn't look like they are going anyway. I guess it's still possible, but if they were to also do upgrades to the barn, I don't know where they would move the rhinos.

It also is strange because I read an article and it said that the Brookfield Zoo paid for half the cost to send the hippo to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo because they said they were happy to give the hippo some company. Also the hippo was in her early 40s so that might say why they sent them away. Also if this was for the elephant expansion they could have kept the hippos unless they are getting Asian Elephants and they just got a new black rhino so I do not think they are getting rid of their pachyderms. Plus the zoo has not been talking about the new elephant exhibit except for some signs in the pachyderm exhibit that says they are planning on getting elephants back.

Maybe they moved the hippo on animal welfare grounds, because as a species they are gregarious animals.

The pachyderm exhibits are really emptying out. On the north side of the building only 3 of the 6 yards are in use. One Brazilian Tapir rotates between two exhibits, and a there's still a pygmy hippo exhibit. With the hippopotamus exhibit now being empty that makes 3 yards on that side of the building that are no longer in use. The south side of the building has 3 rhino yards. There is normally only one rhino on exhibit in the outdoor yards. One of the rhino yards is the old elephant exhibit, and in the last year I have only seen a rhino in that yard on one occasion. Hopefully with the new male rhino at the zoo they will start using that exhibit more. Inside the pachyderm building the only animals you can view now are the pygmy hippo and two indoor rhino areas.

I asked a zoo employee about the new male rhino, and I learned that he's off exhibit in the old indoor elephant area (which you can no longer get to for viewing). I was told he is still settling in and that they aren't sure when he will be on exhibit in the outdoor yards.

The zoo is expecting dwarf mongoose babies in the next few days. The zoo is also putting up new fencing by the the kangaroo yards allowing visitors to get closer to the animals. I have pictures of the new fencing going up if anyone is interested in seeing them just let me know and I will post them.

Is there a plan to this all?
And what are its implications?

At least their is some good news today about the mongooses and hopefully the pygmy hippos will be moved into the old hippo exhibit. Can you please post some pictures of the new fenceing I want to see how you can come closer to the kangaroos.
