Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo News - 2012

I got a few pictures in the aviary. Haven't checked to see how any of my pictures for the day turned out (won't have a chance until the morning). I think I got a good one of the (Melodious?) laughingthrush, the cattle egrets, a parrot of some sort, and maybe one or two other things. We had to rush through Asia Quest to meet a friend while he was on his lunch break, and my camera batteries died while we were in the aviary. Bad time all around.

I visited the Columbus Zoo today. A few observations:

-no visible construction on Safari Africa from inside the zoo
-Stingray Bay is not open yet (signs said expect mid-June). Also, this attraction requires an additional fee- $3 for non-members and $2 for zoo members.
-Jack Hanna was at the zoo today!

I posted some pictures of the Stingray Bay exhibit on my blog including the Columbus Zoo 2012 map so you can see where exactly it is located.

To answer your question from the blog, Stingray Bay was built on former greenspace. If you go way back to the Wyandot Lake days, Stingray Bay sits near the site of the splashdown pool for The Jetstream / Zuma Falls slide complex.

Another minor change this year, the Flying Scooters ride (just in front of the new Stingray Bay) has been rethemed from Mission: Macaw to S.S. Stingray. The tubs are now painted as submarines and the central tower is adorned with rays and underwater plant life. A nice nod to the new attraction.

a New Press Release says the currently planned are will take up 43 acres. It also say they are considering doing the second phase which would consist of 67 acres For more click on this link

I feel a little better after reading this article before it was said that this section would not have rhinos but it said that they are going to move the rhinos so that means that the zoo can possibly get Indian rhinos or even Sumatran rhinos. I am also happy that they might add another phase to the section that might include African Elephants. If the zoo does get African Elephants would this be the only zoo in the U.S. to have separate exhibits for both Asian and African Elephants?

The plans for the actual savannah sound incredible. With that being said the possiblity of a second phase still no longer mentions Hippos which in our opinion is kind of a bummer. Now for a question is the possible additional 67 acres part of the orginal planned savannah area or would they be abandoning ideas for Madagascar and South America?

Looking at the map of the planned site it says monkeys so I wonder what type the zoo will get. I think that they should get patas monkeys or a type of baboon.

I've never been so happy to have received false information :p I'm very glad to hear that there is still a possibility for a second phase, and that the rhinoceroses are still in the plans for the exhibit.

Me too. I feel much better about this exhibit, the rhino exhibit looks very big in comparison to the savanna and other exhibits.

Two male Amur tiger cubs were born on June 28th and 29th. They are the first Amur tigers to ever be born at the zoo, and they are the first tigers of any subspecies to be born at the zoo since 1990.
