San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2012

Enjoyed my visit today at the zoo. Pleasent day it was. I have a bunch of questions so here it goes. Does the zoo only have one pygmy hippos on display now? What used to be in the exhibit next to the snow leopard on the hill it was empty? Me and my gf saw a cat in the back cages of the black Jaguar, what species was it? My guess bobcat it looked like it was in quartine thou. Alot of animals were off display in the discovery outpost, what animals other than the ocelot, spot necked otter, serval, meerkat.rock hyrax, marmosets, fennec fox, fossa, kea and Macaw were there? Oh BTW echidna died too :( . was the painted dog exhibit the empty exhibit going up the two esculators to elephant odyssey? If so why did the move them from there to next to the striped hyena? Saw the baby jaguars but couldn't get a good pic Sry. Has anyone ever seen the kinkajou they have on exhibit? What used to be in the little glass exhibit by the tigers? The glass is shattered in that exhibit? How many kiwis does the zoo have? The kiwi trail was closed today. I'm wondering if they only had one because recently my hometown national avairy aquired a kiwi from the sdz and his name is peewee. That's all thks had a lot of fun and can't wait to do seaworld.

I can only answer 2 of them. I heard they took the male pygmy hippo off exhibit hoping the 2 would be more interested in breeding when they are reunited. The exhibit next to moving sidewalk is not empty it has 2 spotted hyenas in it.

@betsy hey we missed the kagu bird . Is it in Owens avairy or below the eagles ? cause we didn't go into those areas. Or is it in parker aviary cause that was closed today as well as the tortoise exhibit?

The kagu is in the aviary on the way to get on the tour bus and also in the row of aviaries behind the polar bear gift shop. Neither aviary is easy to find if you don't know where to look. Was Adhama on exhibit today?

There still could be reasons better to be off with two groups of bonobo instead of one. For the SSP there seems to be one group less. So one group less to have variation of males breeding. One group less in case of accident.

Or is an other zoo planning starting giving the bonobo a chance in the near future?

A female giraffe was born to first time mom Harriet on Wednesday. A second giraffe is due next month. The bonobos from the Safari Park have been on exhibit in the morning since Tuesday.

@jusko88 - the large open top hillside exhibit next to the snow leopards used to have a herd of blue sheep, which I think are now entirely gone from US collections? For the last several years it housed a ground hornbill (quite a large exhbit for this animal).

The enclosure behind the black jaguar, Orson, houses a caracal. When I did a behind the scenes tour two years ago or more, there were two, an older female and her fairly old daughter. I was told they were too skittish on exhibit, so were housed here. This past winter at another behind the scenes this was down to one caracal.

In one of the small cages across from the Big Cat Trail, the ones with the kinkajou, bat-eared foxes, & fossa, they now have a Turkmenistan caracal on exhibit. (I have never seen the kinkajou. Educators have told me they have seen it on overnight camper tours.) There has recently been an ocelot here, too, but yesterday the white nosed coati was back. The coati's enclosure in the Children's Zoo was empty.

An interesting aside on the SDZ caracals: When Kasten the South African caracal was bitten by a baby rattlesnake in 2005, two Turmenistan caracals at the Zoo were blood donors for transfusions for him. Kasten survived the bite and is still performing amazing leaps and jumps as an animal ambassador for caracals. Video & pictures of Kasten are online, including:

The Parker Aviary is opened again after being closed for 2 months for refurbishment. I posted pictures of the signs in the gallery. Based on the look of the signs it seems there might be new birds. I don't know what was in there before.

Thank you for posting those Betsy.

The Parker aviary is now a Central/South American theme whereas it was previously an Asian/Australasian theme. This change must have been made due to the (near) blanket ban of importing wild birds from Asian countries.

I can only assume the bowerbird (a relic of the previous theme) was not moved because this is where it has built its bower.

I don't know that the Asian import ban has as much to do with it as a recent decision to change the theme of the entire area into the geographically ambiguous "Lost Forest" and incorporate previously unrepresented neotropical animals. Tufted capuchins have recently been given a home in this area as well.
