As part of the makeover for Night Safari, a new Australian trail has been proposed and animals being considered include Tasmanian devils (woohoo!), wombats and wallabies.
I hope we can get some quolls too. Also being proposed is a replica of a glow-worm cave. It will probably be created in the next 1 to 2 years.

It's quite an obvious choice of geographic location since Australia has a huge variety of unique nocturnal species. Forum members from Oz, please help to keep a lookout for potential animal exports!

Nothing confirmed but the Australian wildlife in Healsvile Sanctuary and Melbounre zoo have skyrocketed, maybe some might be sent to Singapore in the future?

I hope quolls are intorduced into Singapore barely any, if none Asian zoos have these australia animals,

Chawang, Sang Wira donate sperm to Taronga

Both Chawang and his 7 year old son Sang Wira donated sperm to Taronga last week for AI purposes.

I wonder why semen was collected from Sang Wira. At 7, he's not exactly sexually mature. Will his semen be of use?

Thank you Zoosih, Apparently plans are to inseminate the Matriach 16 year old Pornthip. Our bull Bong Su donate some bull Chawang's was just so "beautiful" that staff chose to use Chawang's sperm. This will be great for future breeding and genetic diversity. But i agree, why would Sang Wira donate his sperm? Can you give me the article please?

While a 7 year old bull is certainly not mature (and won`t be able to mate an adult female) it`s not unusual that captive born bulls of this age produce vital semen. I guess they took semen from both bulls to make sure to have at least one sample of good quality. And there is a theory that using the semen of 2 different bulls increases the chance for a pregnancy.

So let me get this clear, they use two elephants of the same gene for more sperm of use? And because Sang Wira is too young to breed but he has very healthy sperm to donate which will carry on a different bloodline?

The German AI team always prefer to use semen from two different bulls during an elephant insemination. Their research shows a higher chance of conception occuring.

So Sang Wire is still living at Singapore zoo, are they still looking for a home for him?

Sang Wira will have to be transferred because there is only space for one bull in Singapore, and Chawang isn't going anywhere soon. Wira will probably be moved by next year, any longer and he'll be too big to fly.

Orangs on board Singapore Flyer

Monkeys In The News: Orangutans Take A Ride In The Singapore Flyer

Something you don't see everyday - Orang Utans riding in the world's largest observation wheel in the city. Although the Zoo says its to raise awareness about the plight of orangs, its quite obvious that its nothing more than a thinly-veiled marketing attempt.

Some people might think that the orangs would have been terribly stressed out, but Singapore's orangs are rather savvy creatures that have been accustomed to humans from a young age. I'm pretty sure the 2 orangs were quite comfortable on board the wheel. Probably good for the orangs too, to get out of the Zoo for a while and see new things.

Thanks, Zoosih do you have any idea where?

Orangs Utans are very intelligent and they are spoilt at Singapore zoo, hmm it would be a funny sight to see an Orang-Utans in the next capsule from you! I wonder how much money they made out of this?

Chawang broke his tusk

Pity, Chawang the bull elephant broke one of his gorgeous tusks during a musth rage. The keepers decided to saw the other to the same length. The tusks are now only half as long as they used to be.

On the plus side, he now feeds easier; the crossed tusks used to impede his trunk movements.

That is same he isn't as magnificent as he looked previously, by I guess it is for the best and good for Chawang,

I am the Assistant Curator for Zoology Department at the Night Safari. It has come to my knowledge that Zooish has been posting my photos without permission on this forum.

The information above concerning Chawang's sawn tusk is not true. The keepers did not have anything to do with the sawing of his tusks. Chawang broke both of his tusks by himself. The broken pieces of tusks are in our possession if anyone wants to dispute that.

Zooish's comments does not represent the views of the Singapore Zoological Gardens nor is he sanctioned as the spokesperson for Singapore Zoologiocal Gardens.

I do not want to be represented by Zooish in anyway in this forum or anywhere else without permission.
