Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo news 2012

Tavi, a dwarf mongoose, gave birth to 3 pups on September 13th. Brookfield Zoo is one of only 12 North American zoos to exhibit dwarf mongoose.

I visited the zoo today, and I have a few updates.
- A 8-9 month old female joey Wombat is about ready to leave the pouch.
- The African Wild Dogs very recently had 7 pups. It's her second litter, the first litter was 10 pups.
-Habitat Africa...The Forest! is closed until late November for renovations. I also seen a Forest Buffalo in one of the yards off the back of the building.
-Tropic World Africa and Asia have undergone small renovations. There's new rock work, and a lot more climbing ropes and vines for the monkeys. I'll try to post pictures of the renovations soon. These renovations were for the Colobus Monkeys, Guenon, Mandrills...and Gibbons.

Did Brookfield send away the older litter of ten pups yet or are they still at the soo. If they are still here the exhibit must be getting crowded to have 20 wild dogs. It is good to hear that the zoo did not send away the Forest Buffalo but I wonder if he/she is getting to old to be sent away. With the renovations to Tropic World it looks like they are finally following their master plan.

The zoo kept two of the African Wild Dog pups from the previous litter. I know a few were sent to Lincoln Park Zoo, as for the rest I have no idea. The improvements to Tropic World probably won't be noticeable to most people, unless you visit the zoo frequentły.

Another reason why the wolf exhibit is the best in the U.S.

In this case of reintroduction, exhibit quality has nearly no effect on this wolf being chosen for release. USFWS chooses more based on the captive and wild population demographics, along with the individual wolf's mean kinship.

Finally a contender to beat a pygmy hippo baby for cutest baby in the world :)

My vote for cutest baby animal goes to Clouded Leopard, which IMO beats out hippos and wombats! Not that this wombat and baby pygmies arent cute

Does anyone on here know when the young wombats due to come up to Toronto will be leaving for their new home? I'd love it if we could make a big deal about their arrival before our panda's arrive and no one will care that we have just recieved two more of the rare critters, bringing our total to 3. Hope we dont have to wait until Hamlet, our current male whose more than 30 years old, dies.

I'm pretty sure they left Brookfield a long time ago.

Geeze trust Toronto Zoo to tell people anything! We do everything in a very stupid way that almost always fails to promote new animals, births, and successes, yet highlight any failures, deaths and oh our elephant issues.

Thanks for the quick answer. Have to get to the zoo sometime before snow falls to see them.

Dinosaur's Alive (the animatronics) will be coming back to the zoo in spring 2013.

This has been a great breeding year for Brookfield's African species! (3 black footed cats, an aardvark, 3 dwarf mongoose, 7 African wild dogs and now a giraffe)
