I recently visited South Lakes Wild Animal Park on the 30th of October. The weather wasn't the best ever but the park is certainly one of the best zoos I've ever been to!
The animals were all cared for so well that none of them looked too skinny or too fat. There is little walking space so OAPs and children don't get tired.
Some of the real highlights of the zoo are: The Andean Bears were certainly the most interesting to see as they are so active and yet so lazy, The Big Cat exhibits are amazing as you can get to see them climb to reach their food and also roar right in front of your eyes, The African Savannah is the biggest enclosure and it really lets the White Rhinos Peralta Giraffe and the Hamadryas Baboons have a lot of exercise, The Primate species they have are a large collection and certainly but a smile to someones face AND The Pygmy Hippos are my favourite animal at the zoo as it is amazing to see them wallow in the water from on top of the boardwalk.:):):)
I would seriously recommend a visit to South Lakes as it is the most family friendly zoo I have ever visited!

Just got to pick you up on something despite what ever the park may say their giraffes are NOT and I repeat are NOT peralta they are in fact antiquorum!!!Except one which is a hybrid male that has not had the snip, yet is being kept with valueable pure female antiquorum Giraffes, giving a pretty good chance that unneccasary hybrids could be born at this collection!!!

Also yes its always nice to see Bears living in the same exhibit as a species of their natural prey in the wild!!!

Do they only have one hybrid male now? I was under the impression they had 2.0? I know the Antiquorum Giraffes are 1.3. I really much doubt the male Antiquorum will breed with the females with the two bigger males still at South Lakes.

I'm pretty certain I only saw 5 Giraffes last time I visited, but I could be wrong!

The only bear that is a predator is the polar bear. The spectacled bear is the second most herbivorous bear in the world and would only hunt animals if it was half the weight it was supposed to be.

Are you saying the zoo is bad or OK as I don't see how the zoo has anything bad with it.

all bears are predators. Even the primarily-herbivorous giant panda is known to kill and eat other animals (the best way to trap them is to bait the trap with meat).

I don't understand "...would only hunt animals if it was half the weight it was supposed to be." Is there a typo in there? It doesn't make sense.

Did I say they wouldn't attack you at all.

And anyway I understand your view but what I don't understand is why you decided to make unkind comments on a post that is praising something.

@ 11jadaway every one that posted after my comments were only just trying to educate you, that the info you were giving was wrong, you reply's were bang out of order and not what we expect on this forum. As for if South Lakes is a bad place I suggest you visit a few more places, and then judge it I think you will find its not as good as you think its is now!

Sorry about that, not in a good mood at the moment.
Still no excuse for that type of post,if I posted comments like that every time I came home for work in a foul mood,I would have been banned from the forum years ago!!I come on this forum to relax and improve my mood, not for it raise my blood pressure over posts like that!

Not to be rude, but how does posting a criticism on my post improve your mood?
It wasn't a criticism I was merely pointing out that was not the sort of post that people expect,on here as it could start a process that could lead you to being banned from this forum, which I'm pretty certain you don't want.So lets just say it was a bit of advice to think before posting!!

I agree with zoogiraffe completely. When I first started visiting I also thought it was one of the best collections I had visited and was completely blown away at first - this was my first visit. I then visited several other Zoo's like ZSL Whipsnade and Chester and I saw a difference straight away. Spectacled/Andean Bears should live separately from Tapirs and Capybaras. Chester keep there Bears separate from the Tapirs and Capybaras, have you ever wondered why the Tapirs at South Lakes haven't bred?

This is forum is too try and educate people a little more and offer them advice. 11jadaway I think the other members were trying to give you some advice and help you.

How do you know he got these facts from South Lakes? The poster doesn't say this is where the information came from. This could have come from a variety of different sources.

I am not saying South Lakes is the greatest zoo in the UK (I feel that it most certainly isn't), but I do feel it often gets bashed with unfair comments and incorrect facts. Yes they have made a few silly mistakes with regards to displaying information, but that does not mean that ALL the incorrect facts posted on a thread about the zoo come from the zoo itself.

Did you get this information from South Lakes' own signage or literature(eg. their Guidebook)?

If yes, it is very misleading.
If no, then to be fair to South Lakes, they can't be accused (in this case) of giving out misleading information.

As pointed out by others, while the Polar Bear may be the only species to regularly hunt and catch large prey like Seals, all Bears are predators in some form-e.g. Brown bears fishing for Salmon or catching smaller mammals is all hunting/predatory behaviour.

I'm confused by the statement about Spectacled Bears- I deduce it means they would need to be much smaller and lighter to hunt efficiently?

Have just highlighted this too.;)
