Changes You Would Make to Your Zoo

This is blospz's partner. I just wanted to add my two cents about the Maryland Zoo. I agree with the previous poster that they could change the empty former hoof stock paddocks to an Asian exhibit. It would be nice to see a variety of species like they mentioned, however all of them would probably be too much and not enough adequate space for all of those creatures. Another option would be to build a South American themed or even an Australian themed area. It seems so few zoos really focus on these areas with stellar exhibits and unusual animals. It would be cool to see an indoor rainforest area mixed with outdoor exhibits. This zoo has so few indoor exhibits that it I think it would help, especially with attendance in the colder months of the year. As for improvements to existing to areas I would say Africa needs more vantage points for the zebra/ostrich/rhino/ hoof stock area. It would be cool to build a bridge over the water and a boardwalk around the other side of the rock area for other viewing points. Also add pygmy hippos to the empty area across from the sitatunga exhibit. Redo viewing and exhibit for the lions and the okapi. Allow visitors to view elephants while in the barn. Possibly add some outdoor space for the sifaka complete with climbing and space to leap. In the children's area the farm needs a total revamp and reinvention. It is desperately in need of an update and more species/ more animals added to it. The forest area could have different forest animals exhibited. Skunks, beavers, badgers, black bears, white tail deer (walk through like Pittsburgh), porcupine, red tailed hawk, bald eagle would all be welcome additions. The river otter exhibit could be cut in half and add either more river otters to the other half (as they are not very social creatures) or another species like beavers. The Arctic area needs more animals added or ones who have passed replaced more quickly. The snow owl exhibit has been empty too long. I would love to see them readded as well as ptarmigans exhibited. Snow weasels, snow hares, and arctic wolves would all be welcome additions as well. A major addition would be to add harbor seals to the area if they expanded the area. Overall the zoo just needs to add more animals species and more animals to the population of their existing species.

the long island game farm in manorville, new york should have some more endangered animals, at least a few more monkeys, mabye peccaries, tapirs may even be a good idea. Also, they should put their giraffe, ostriches, & zebras in the smae exhibit. The kangaroos & emu should be contain together in another exhibit. All their south american birds should be in the same exhibit as an aviary. Their peacock exhibit has about 6 individual birds, but it's so small, so they should send about half of the birds to other facilities. another good animal to add to the collection would be sloths

There isnt much I would change to the Bronx Zoo except to add Clouded Leopards to Jungle World. Being a big wild canine fan, I would also like to see dholes

At Animal Kingdom, I would love to see an Australian exhibits/land. I would love a koala/croc trail. I would like to see them post Vet schedules so we could know what was happening at the Panet Watch

There is so much that could be added to Animal Kingdom. An Australia land would be nice, as would an India or Middle East land.

MJMcB, good ideas for the bronx zoo. I would also say move the white rhinos to the former cheetah exhibit in "African Plains" & put regular or pygmy hippos or mabye elephants where the white rhinos used to be at the Zoo Center. also, they could probably put elephants back in the Asia section of the zoo somewhere. I would also think that adding bongos to the Congo Rainforest exhibit may be a good idea.

for the San Diego Zoo, all I have to say about it is to update their old exhibits for hoofstock, carnivores, etc...

For the Dallas Zoo, I think they should add one or two male african elephants to the collection

Spotted Hyenas already live in the Cheetah exhibit, and that exhibit is not suitable for White Rhinos.
Elephants are still at the zoo, but they are eventually phasing them out.

for the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, I would say they could probably have commerson's dolphins or mabye belugas again

BeardsleyZooFan, whoops, I was wrong! DOH!!!!! But they could probably make room for the elephants somewhere else to once again have elephants so they won't have to phase them out at all.

As for the rhinos, then put them somewhere else in "African Plains"

also for the bronx zoo, they sould probably have animals rarley seen in captivity, like koalas, platypuses, tasmanian devils, & giant pandas. doing this will put the bronx zoo higher on the list as one of the finest zoos.

the dc zoo should have more african hoofstock as well as more elephants, & probably chimps, & mabye hippos again

iluvwhales- Another reason the elephants are leaving is due to how elephants are expensive, and in these economic times, it's not easy to build a brand new elephant exhibit.
Most of those animals you mentioned in your last post are hard to bring into the U.S. because of the countries where they are from. There are no Platypus outside of Australia and no captive Tasmanian Devils as well, except for Copenhagen. It's still not positive that San Diego will get devils for their Outback exhibit. Giant Pandas are only in 4 U.S. zoos, and China owns all of those pandas. Most koalas in the U.S. also technically belong to San Diego. These are just a few reasons why it would be hard to acquire these animals. I'm not trying to ruin your dreams (I would like to see these species as well), but it's near impossible.

the central park zoo should probably have giant anteaters and mabye a primate exhibit between the sea lion exhibit & Central Garden. it could be either one exhibit with a visitor path over it or two exhibits connected by a bridge over the visitor path. either way, mabye it would be multiple levels, including the holding areas

THAT WOULD BE SO AWESOME

also, river otters of some kind would be good for the collection as well as servals or some type of small wild cat

oh darn it, I'm just such an ambicious person

ZooAmerica in Hershey

I would add more native species such as :
Fisher
American Badger
Red Wolf
Star-Nosed Mole
Nutria
Gulf Coast Jaguarundi
American Paddlefish
Pronghorn
Collared Peccary
Wolverine
Ermine
Mountain Goat
Dall Sheep

I've never visited San Antonio, but after seeing some pictures and taking a look at the zoo map, I have a couple of ideas:

*Create an Asian Rainforest complex to go along with Gibbon Forest and the Komodo Dragon habitat. Redesign the bear grottoes into naturalistic habitats for Sumatran tigers and sun bears, the lemur grotto can become a binturong habitat, and create new habitats for Malayan tapir and babirusa.

*Replace the old hoofstock and other animal exhibits by building Africa Live Phase 3 (maybe a 4th phase) with new exhibits for lions, spotted hyenas, rhinos (don't care if they're white or black species), a multi-species savanna (giraffe, zebra, ostrich, antelope), warthogs, meerkats, and, if possible, African elephants.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom:

1. Add an Extra Orca to live with Shouka.
2. Put Grevy's Zebras and Grant's Gazelle to live with the Giraffes.
3. Add a new Primate Area with Orangutans, Gibbons, Japanese Macaques, Lemurs, Tamarins and Marmosets.
4. Add the following animals to the park- Pygmy Hippo, Llama, Snow Leopard, Przewaslki's Horse, Dhole, Giant Anteater, Capybara, Bush Dog, Babirusa, Maned Wolf, Meerkats, Sloth Bears, Puffins, Cassowary, Indian Gharial and Komodo Dragon.
