Zoogiraffes tongue in cheek look forward to 2013

Prediction for Twycross: The Elephants will leave before the end of 2013 (despite the recent investment in PC facility) as a cost cutting measure

Which could bring us full circle to the Noah's ark prediction ;)

Short-beaked Echidna, surely? ;)

For my own reasons I hope this a) is true and b) comes to pass before my visit, if the current one hops the perch before then :p
Have changed it to Short-beaked,but then you never know they could get,Long-beaked from RSCC when they have a clear out!!!

Stranger things have happened. :p

My first prediction - by the end of 2013, the spectacled bears at South Lakes will escape. This will be denied by David Gill, who will insist the rash of disappearances of cats, dogs and small children in the surrounding area is coincidental. Strangely enough, the capybara and tapir will both successfully breed shortly after ;)

AFAIK, South Lakes' only hold one male Capybara. ;)

My first prediction - Blackpool Zoo breed their Amur Tigers for the first time since 1996 and have a great year breeding wise, breeding the following;-

Aardvark
Giant Anteater
Hartmann's Mountain Zebra
Pileated Gibbon
Red Panda
Rhinoceros Iguana
Western Lowland Gorilla

And too top it all off, they import a group of Gazelles - species I'm not sure. ;)

Marwell Zoo the Sulwesi Crested Macaques leave the collection to be replaced by 1 of the 2 groups of Bonobo, from Twycross when they have yet another clear out of species to try and save more money.

Fact or Fiction I wonder? :D It was talked about before....;)

And, bobs your uncle, the vacated House becomes the new Chimpanzee complex!!!!:D

Trotters World of Animals breed the Black Wildebeest.

Twycross Zoo the Giraffe House is converted to take the Bactrian Camel after it is decided the idea of converting it to House the Giant Tortoise, was just plain stupid idea! They annouce the arrival of Peter Suddock from Dudley Zoo as the new Director, first positive move made at Twycross for over 8 years, because atleast he has a proven track record of building good projects at Dudley on peanuts, which is good news for Twycross as they only have peanuts to pay for any project.During the year a group of Bonobo leave, along with these leaving the following species also leave Asian Elephants,Malayan Tapir,Yellow-throated Marten, plus many single or none breeding primates leave and the Arabian Striped Hyena leave to make way for a walk through Lemur enclosure!

Trotters World of Animals breed the Black Wildebeest.
as a trotter's regular (3 times a year) I dearly hope they breed this as well as the asian fishing cats, servals and asian palm civets.
They dearly need to demolish the concrete hell hole that is the porcupine and pig exhibits(anyone who has seen them will agree)(photo coming soon).
perhaps they should move the pigs back to there former, naturall exhibit and possibly move the porcupines into the former wallaby exhibit.
To boost there collection they should get more canadian lynxes, at not give them away this time.
If they wont it to be a serious attraction they should get a large predator(lion, tiger etc.), another small cat speciues, and get rid of some of the boring ungulates and get some exciting ones(rhino, elephant, saiga, mountain goat).
And improve the aviary complex.

this is all I have to say.

Black Wildbeest- very likely.:)

Twycross. Bactrian Camel or 'Outside langurs' perhaps?

I would hope some of the Twycross 'leavers' are correct.:) The Isle of Wight primate sanctuary has already taken Monkeys from Twycross also.

Male Gorillas for West Mids?- quite possible- they've seen Longleat get them.;)

Polar Bears for Whipsnade?- who knows but another quite possible one after seing what Highland W.P have done with them.

David Field is on record as saying that the Asian drive through area would be needed to have Polar Bears back at Whipsnade, so I rather doubt that under present management.

As far as Pertinax's quip about Kumbuka - well, he knows his Gorillas and London's setup seems to exist under some bizarre hex, so I'll believe anything on that front, sadly excepting the creation of a successful breeding group.

for London Zoo again- they finally get the handraised male gorilla 'Kumbuka' from Paignton, then discover he is hooked on people and totally disinterested in the females.:(

I sincerely hope that this is not a case of "many a true word said in jest".

Re, giant tortoises in old giraffe house, yes it was a ridiculous idea, however I recall once hearing that they might be relocated in the old pets corner, which I think would have been a good idea, it would not cost a fortune to refurbish it and it would certainly give the animals themselves better living accommodation than what they have at present, it would also give a new lease of life to a building which is currently almost redundant, and also contribute in another small way to enhance the visitor experience.

That move of the Giant Tortoise to the old Pets Corner was a bit more than the a rumour!!!But it didn't happen because it was a good and sensible idea that would have given a very serious new lease of life to a good sound building!!!

Ah right, that explains that then.............yes well.......let me think..........no comment:)

Scrub the Polar Bears for Whipsnade then ?;)

As for 'Kumbuka'- he has an almost identical background to another handraised male 'Awali' who was also previously at Paignton and then went to a breeding group at Barcelona, was found to be fixed on the female staff instead of the female Gorillas, and has now been transferred to a male group in France (Amneville). Whereas all the males from Paignton that later turned out successful breeders were mother-raised- apart from Mambi who did at least spend time with a female in a trio at Twycross. So I think the odds are against Kumbuka's chances of breeding, maybe 25% that he will, but obviously hope he is a success.
