Could marijuana farms be a potential zoo funding source?

It was legalized there on December 10th, 2012. Are you actually saying proponents of hemp production should already be able to demonstrate its economic benefits to the state in ten days?

Also, legalizing Marijuana for 'personal use' is a completely different law from legalizing industrial hemp production. One does not cover the other, so this is not a green light to hemp farmers to go into production. Plus, the tyranny that the modern US executive has become (both left and right), will ensure federal raids and all manner of tactics to undermine states rights following the Marijuana laws, so anyone wanting to farm industrial hemp has more to lose from going into this if their state passes a law allowing it when the Federal government opposes it. Just look at the craziness around raw milk.

11 days;) I heard people (stoners) talking about it a while ago so I thought it was legalized earlier. I have no use or interest in hemp so I don't keep up with it.

Hemp (generally referring to varieties low in psychoactive compounds) is more useful than almost any other plant ever. You can eat it, build houses with it and make ropes or cloth or even plastic from it. It's being used to 'soak up' contamination in Chernobyl and as a biofuel. It's also used as animal bedding (so the zoo could use it for something!).

Whatever else you can say about it and its naughty relative, marijuana, it's a very useful plant.

(my favourite fact from that page is that a Mercedes C-Class car can include up to 20kg of hemp in its composition)

First things first, I'm not sure that a zoo growing cannabis (I'm not keen on the term marijuana) would be able to make much money off it. If it was a legal substance then surely the government tax would be astronomical? It is on petrol, tobacco and alcohol so why would this be any different?
If they were growing hemp then that's a different situation altogether, as Maguari pointed out its very useful for all manner of reasons.

And on the moral issue of cannabis (and drugs in general) if someone wants to poison their body then it's their choice. If they aren't harming anybody and aren't mentally damaging themselves then where's the harm? Yes, they may be killing themselves but they are well aware of that and who are we to stop them?
I know several drug users and some of them are the nicest people around, alternatively some of the biggest drinkers I know are the sort of people that cause fear and anxiety because of their tempers and volatile nature. That is a generalisation but alcohol fuelled violence is far more common than 'weed' related violence.

And since we have a fair few scholars on here I wouldn't be surprised if a few of those have dabbled in the past... ;)

Interestingly, in those past 11 days, the sales of Cheetos have skyrocketed.

cannabis (I'm not keen on the term marijuana)

Cannabis is the genus of plant the species belongs to, so could apply to either form. My post used hemp vs. marijuana to distinguish (though I'm not sure in reality there's quite such a clear distinction).

I can honestly say I've never smoked anything (tobacco included) and have no interest in doing so - though I'd be lying if I claimed to never have seen (and more particularly smelt - the scent is incredibly distinctive) it being smoked at certain disreputable parties!

This just reminded me that a weed legalisation plot got a Doctor Who reference into Family Guy. If that's not a good enough argument, I don't know what is.

As soon as I read the afore mentioned comment I instantly thought of Family Guy but I fail to remember the Doctor Who reference? I do remember the Cheetos cheetah crushing up and snorting Cheetos which I found hilarious for some reason? I think the fact Rush were playing in the background may have amused me the most though. (My stepdad is a massive fan! :)) It did give rise to the best song to feature in Family Guy though :-

And fair play for never smoking anything, I'm impressed! Especially with all those 'disreputable' parties! :p

So what was the Doctor Who reference?

~Thylo:cool:

One of the advantages of legalisation is given by Brian as being that 'ratings for Doctor Who are through the roof'. ;)

It's not my favourite Who reference in FG though - that would be the use of the 1974-1979 title sequence as the hyperspace effect in the Star Wars spoof 'Blue Harvest' (complete with a huge image of Tom Baker's face looming through the Millennium Falcon's cockpit windows).

Way off topic now! :D

The trick is just to decide which disreputable things you're interested in and stick to them! :D :D

More seriously, the whole concept of inhaling smoke for pleasure boggles me every bit as much as injecting yourself for non-medical reasons or watching The Only Way is Essex.

(non-UK users - you can Google it if you want, but you may be happier in blissful ignorance...)

I don't think you want to get into the topic of stupid shows. Anybody down under ever hear of Animal X: Natural Mystery Unit (or Monster Quest if you are an American)? jbnbsn can probably give you hundreds of shows he finds stupid.

They're not the same show but have the same topic.

I don't watch TV.

What happened when you were a Nielsen Family?

Ok, now we are totally off-track.

There was a box hooked up to my TV that registered what I watched and when I watched it. Being a single male living alone, I was surprisingly a valuable and rare commodity for the statisticians.

was this a reply to Maguari? You know the UK isn't in Australia right?

That was pretty cool, I'm sure there were a few more Who references as well. I vaguely remember Peter, or possibly someone else(?), wearing a long scarf and coat in a Tom Baker style. Can't remember much else though.

That made me laugh out loud! :)
You do realise that you've made everybody curious and they probably will look it up... You evil man! :D

It was an Australian show so I was asking the people of Australia. It might've been aired in the UK also since it aired in America but UK TV tends to be better than American so I'm not sure. There's a whole channel on YouTude that posted a bunch of the show's episodes (and its precursor). There are 3,534 subscribers.

If I had a favorite episode, this would be it:
