Taxon Advisory Groups

A question about Taxon Advisory Groups, when you read about the animals that are being focused on for breeding, does that mean those are the ONLY animals from that taxa that are going to be found in AZA-accredited zoos?

I am not sure but before Birmingham had their 5 cub litter of lions last year I didn't think they participated in the Lion SSP. Maybe someone with more knowledge can further explain but I was under the impression their birth wasn't planned.

I was about to post a similar question to the title of this thread but see that I already have and have only gotten one response. So I'm going to bump it. ;)

Sometimes animals can be excluded from breeding programmes, and so may not be part of a managed population, even if the zoo they are found in is an accredited zoo. At least thats the way it works in Australasia, for example one member zoo has capuchins which they had before joining the ZAA, but they elected not to include these in the regional population (as they are an old pair). I don't really know if this answered your question or not though.

What I meant was when looking at the Taxon Advisory Groups it shows several species in zoos. For example, if you look at the Antelope TAG it has several pages with different species of antelope such as bongos, blackbuck, and pronghorn but it doesn't show species like chinkara. Does that mean there are NO chinkara in ANY US zoos? I would have checked ISIS but it seems that not everyone can just peruse their site.

Oh right. It wouldn't necessarily include them all, as not all would be "programme species". A passing mention of non-programme species present in the country would probably be included though. And it probably has no authority on all US zoos, just the AZA ones, so wouldn't cover all antelope present in the country. Further, not all zoos report to ISIS, so even if there were no listings on ISIS, there could be some in the country.

Having said that, if the species is not mentioned on the TAG document, and you can't find a record of the species online (e.g. ISIS, ZooChat, etc) then there probably aren't any.

Not so at all.

If I wanted to know if there were any Chinkara in any American zoos, and could find no record of them online anywhere (after a very detailed search, using other names, scientific names, etc), I would feel pretty confident saying there aren't any. I might be a little less confident if it was a more obscure taxa, or something with less specific name (e.g. Jaguar, which would throw up lots of unrelated results), or in a country with less internet users, but overall I'd be pretty happy with this conclusion.
