Saint Louis Zoo Saint Louis Zoo News 2013

Does anyone know if there are timelines for the next series of projects at Saint Louis Zoo? In 2010 the Living Promises Campaign was kickstarted and already the $18 million Sea Lion Sound exhibit opened with about a dozen California Sea Lions, an underwater tunnel and a new arena in the center of the zoo. Up next are 5 more projects and 4 of them are brand-new bear habitats.

Sun Bear Forest, Andean Bear Range, Painted Dog Preserve, Polar Bear Point and Grizzly Ridge are the names of the new exhibits, and the River's Edge zone will be home to some of the new enclosures. I just received a passionate email from a fellow ZooChatter friend, and that individual actually provided a great argument that Saint Louis will be the best zoo in the nation within 5-10 years. I'm sure that San Diego, Bronx, Omaha and Columbus would have something to say about that, but I'm a huge fan of Saint Louis and after the bears all receive new habitats I'm not sure what will be left at the zoo that is substandard. Perhaps the 1920's-era Primate House?

2014 for Dogs and Bears in River's Edge. 2017 for Polar Bears. Not sure about Grizzly, as it has not been mentioned.

“Working in partnership with AZA, we are considering the Saint Louis Zoo as a possible final destination for Kali. We recognize that the Saint Louis Zoo is in the process of building a state-of-the-art polar bear exhibit expected to be completed in 2015. Our goal is to work with the Zoo to ensure the proper standards of care are met for the polar bears who will eventually find a home in Saint Louis.”

Interesting. seems this little cub may end up at STLZ. Also, I didn't know they're already working on the Polar Bear exhibit. can anyone confirm?

It seems that there's a lot of anti-elephant in zoos comments in the article. How come this always happens in these online articles?

It seems that there's a lot of anti-elephant in zoos comments in the article. How come this always happens in these online articles?

Two reasons:
1. Commenters never comment on what they love, but rather what they despise. Newspapers have a formula of 1 positive for every 10 negative comments means that the article is fair.

2. Commenters on elephant articles band together en masse. I always see the same names on comments about elephants. They have a well-connected group of a very few, very vocal individuals who think they know better than actual professionals in the field.

unfortunately ARAs dont seem to be aware of the advancements in eehv1 detection and treatment. Both Jade and Maliha were infected in St. Louis and both survived due to treatment. The most recent calf Kenzi hasnt showed any symptoms to my knowledge. In Houston the last two calves have survived due to groundbreaking research in collaboration with Baylor. Ringling is also in on the research train along with smithsonian and the EMA.

on a unrelated note, I think it's very interesting that this will be the fourth female calf in a row at the st. Louis zoo.

No, we haven't broken ground on Polar Bear Point yet. Still hard at work on the Andean Bear, Sun Bear, and Painted Dog areas in River's Edge. But it's exciting to think we have a good chance of having a polar bear back in our collection someday!

We've had five Transcaspian Urials born in the last week and a half. Many of our ungulates have given birth recently. Red Rocks is teeming with the pitter patter of little hooves!
