Smithsonian National Zoo Smithsonian National Zoo News 2013

@ BeardsleyZooFan: I did not see your message until now. I know the sloth bear cannot go on exhibit until it gets vaccines. The cub's examine is in April and the keeper guessed he'd be out in the next couple of months. I would expect the Andean bear cubs a little earlier than that, I heard a prediction of mid April.

Ok, thank you. If the Andean Bear cubs aren't out by the time I'm going to be in D.C., I might just go to the National Aquarium instead and go to the National Zoo in August. Also, thank you for the review of the Elephant Community Center!

Selkie had her first free-range introduction with one of the new seals, Squeegee, a Harbor Seal.
Maripi, the Giant Anteater, is back on exhibit after being ill for the past few weeks. Giant Anteaters - National Zoo
Mae, a 43 year-old White-Cheeked Gibbon, passed away yesterday.

In other news, the wild American Toads that live outside the Bird House are mating, and can be heard trilling.
I might make a visit next week to the zoo.

does any one know about the zoo getting lesser kudu's and whats the update about the being "the worlds greatest zoo by 2016"

I went to the zoo for the first time on Friday, and was impressed. I was unfortunately not able to visit the indoor building of the Reptile Discovery Center, outdoor exhibits of the Bird House, or the Gibbon and Giant Anteater exhibits. Other than that, I think that I was able to clear through most of the zoo.
I'm not sure if the Lesser Kudu or Abyssinian Ground Hornbill have arrived yet, but either way they're not on exhibit.
One of the outdoor exhibits in the Reptile Discovery Center (next to the Komodo Dragon) was closed.
New Tealia Anemones are on exhibit.
The prairie dogs are still not out on exhibit yet.
To anyone wondering, one male Sulawesi Macaque (Spock) and one female Gray-Cheeked Mangabey (Maude) are still at the zoo and live together in Think Tank.
Apparantely, an exhibit change is in process at the Pink-Toed Tarantula exhibit in Amazonia.
I also just found out the zoo had a Sand Cat exhibit. Did anyone else know this?
The howler monkey baby is on exhibit with mom, but is seperated from dad.
Many empty exhibits in the Bird House had the sign "Exhibit in Preparation" near them.
Neither the Andean Bear or Sloth Bear cubs are on exhibit yet.
Photos will be up some time soon.

Why did you miss those exhibits? You missed some nice species like Gharial.
I'm pretty sure the exhibit next to the Komodo Dragon exhibit is another Komodo Dragon exhibit. Unless it is the one with the big pond in which case it's just a pond for wild turtles. If the Tealia anemones are the ones that were born there last year they were on exhibit when I went in July, 2012. Great to hear that the macaque and the mangabey are still there but sad there's only one of each (I missed them on my visit). Can you tell us more about the exhibit change? Where does the zoo have a Sand Cat exhibit and do they have Sand Cats!
Sorry you didn't get to see the bear cubs.

does anyone know if the zoo has any plans for a new animal exhibit nice to know about sand cats and where are they housed

I missed those exhibits for various reasons that I'd rather not share, but I feel that I had a decent trip there.
I don't think it's the pond exhibit.
A sign for the anemones said "First Time On Exhibit! The Zoo pioneered a technique for growing Tealia anemones. Born the size of pinheads in 2010, these young are now big enough to join the adults in this tank."
I do not know about the exhibit change in the tarantula terrarium, I just saw a sign.
Thylo and mxttfan- The Sand Cat exhibit is in the Small Mammal House, right before the first Meerkat exhibit. I didn't see the cats myself.
It's ok about the bear cubs. I really had hopes to see the Andean cubs though.

I'm wondering if this exhibit your talking about is the Chinese alligator exhibit. And as for that female gray cheeked mangabey, Be glad you saw her cause not many people may know but she's the only one of her kind in the US.

No, the Chinese Gator exhibit was open. I'll attach a photo at the bottom of this post.
Don't worry, I was thrilled to see her!:)

I heard it's going to be pretty soon that the Andean cubs are out. I heard there have been some obstacles getting them out there. I don't know if that means Billie Jean is hesistant or if they're still trying to babyproof the exhibit.
