Thanks BjoernN. I have rather lost track of which rhino is which at Chester as I know they have had several imports to add to their breeding nucleus.

Current group is made up of Sammy (m), Magadi (m), Kitani (f), Manyara (f), Ema Elsa (f), Malindi (f), Zuri (f), Chanua (f), Dakima (f)

Ema Elsa is mother to Chanua, and Malindi is mother to Dakima. I don't know the fathers for certain, so I won't guess on here. The previous calves were Asani (Sammy x Kitani) and Bashira (Magadi x Ema Elsa), both of whom have now obviously left.

Chanua is Ema Elsa X Sammy and Dakima - Malindi X Magadi

...anyone else noticed the alphabet pattern with naming the calves? ;)

Does anybody have any info on the female serval. Thanks

She is a customs consfication - been in quarantine at Heathrow for the last 6 months.

Lanky apparently mated her within 3 minutes of their intro without bars, spent some time watching them yesterday and they appear to be getting on like a house on fire - they mated whilst I was their anyway.

Thanks, was there myself on Saturday, talked to a few keepers. Witnessed them mating too.
I thought the male Serval was called Ninja, thats what all the Chester staff that I spoke to called him anyway.

He could be, I've been told both - which was fine whilst we still had both males, but less so now one has moved on. I called him Lanky to one of the keepers on sunday and didn't get corrected, hopefully I'm not that scary that they won't tell me when I'm wrong!

"It is with sadness that we can confirm the death of our female Komodo Dragon, Flora.

Flora, who had been with us since 1999, had been suffering from ill-health and was receiving veterinary care.

Despite the best efforts of both the keeping and veterinary teams, sadly Flora passed away.

Flora was something of a zoo superstar – in December 2006 she made headlines around the world when we were able to prove that Komodo Dragons can reproduce through self-fertilisation, a process known as parthenogenesis.

Flora laid a clutch of 11 eggs with paternity testing later proving she was both the ‘mother’ and ‘father’ of the fertile eggs. Flora’s story, which was first told in the scientific journal Nature, went on to capture global interest.

Dr Gerardo Garcia, Curator of Lower Vertebrates and Invertebrates, said: “Flora was undoubtedly one of the world’s most famous Komodo Dragons and during her lifetime she played a very special part in helping us to understand more about this amazing species.

"Flora will be remembered fondly and much missed and I would like to thank those who have looked after her.”"

Does anyone know if the cheetahs have mated yet, would be great to have cubs this year :)

Unfortunately a mating doesn't guarantee cubs - especially with Cheetahs - so they have been being let together when the time is right as per last time.

In the morning Adaze is normally in the Yurt running around and exploring - then in the afternoon they have been letting the 3 boys have the run of the yurt and the top enclosure they mingle scents and hopefully the scent of males in the area should kick the female into cycling - that's when the fun starts as she needs to select the male she prefers and then they get put together.
Still keeping up? :)
this process is in full swing as we speak!
