The Nonsense Thread

I think I've spent so much time on the Guess the Species threads (although those were good times) and this thread that I've forgotten that this was a forum for zoos.

I just snapped this photo in the supermarket. Is there anything wrong with this sign?

yes, "salad dressing" - salad doesn't need clothes. Either that or it's some kind of perverted vegetable peep-show!! You really disgust me.

In addition to that, am I the only one who finds the term "ethnic food" to be slightly offensive, given that it was Mexican, Chinese, and Indian food? How come pasta had its own label, but didn't fall under the term "ethnic"? Weird!

I told the manager to rename it "international food" or something, but they were adamant that it was ethnic food. Where is DavidBrown and his cultural sensitivity workshops?

you don't think "international food" might be confusing, considering that everything could fall under such a name? Instead of "ethnic food" maybe they could call it "foreigner food" or "food with weird names". Or even just "not Australian food".

Quick question: in Melbourne supermarkets is Greek food sold in the "ethnic" aisle? (Genuine question).

The thing that I find weird about that sign is that Rice and Pickles share a label (at least, I think thats what it says, reflection might be confusing me). Whats that about? Rice is a major staple, pickles are pickles. I would have combined vinegar and pickles, and made rice stand out!

also "Fresh Dairy". Because I know when I go to the supermarket the thing I'm always looking for is "Expired Dairy".

Hey, this could be nanoboy's next photo competition thread: see how many things you can point out in my photo.

Hmmm..... I think Greek food is sold in th ethnic section, like souvlaki box meals, but Greek yoghurt is sold in the dairy section.

What is "Australian food" though? It used to mean "white food" but given that Australia has become so multicultural, it really is all encompassing now. Technically all food is ethnic - rice and pickles being two examples.

Once I was in a mall and there was a sign that said Foot & Dental Care Clinic. And don't think it was two stores, the sign was above the clinic and that's their name!

That would be for people with Foot and Mouth Disease.

:p

I remember in the bookshop "Waterstones" in central London, and they had a "Black & Asian" section...:D

that is an odd mix. But I googled it and it seems not unusual. Even NZ has a Dental and Podiatry clinic. I don't really get the connection between the two.

For those of us with a tendency to put your foot in your mouth?

I asked on Facebook what on earth does "ethnic food" mean, and someone replied and said "you know, like Asian food, Indian food etc.". Is India no longer in Asia?

I went to the Grampians, and there was a huge cutout of a golliwog in front of a knick-knack store. I should be able to dig out a pic. For the life of me, I don't know when we in Australia are going to realise that is an offensive toy. I think they had to remove it from toy stores that Oprah was visiting when she came here. Aussies don't necessarily mean to be offensive - I just think we haven't caught up with the rest of the world in being PC. We are a long way away, after all.

In Australia/NZ "Asia" generally equates to "southeast Asia" in the common tongue (well, southeast and eastern Asia because China, Japan, etc are included as well). "India" is considered separate even though it is of course part of Asia. From the other end of the world (Europe) I understand that "Asia" equates to Pakistan etc.

If you google the question of what "ethnic food" means, the most common explanation is that it is "food that is non-American"......

Hahahaha. Food that is non-American. ROFL! Cherokee or Iroquois? :p

In England, Asian = Pakistani, Indian, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh ([ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Asian]British Asian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame])
I think they call everyone 'Chinese' that looks Oriental.

I wonder what terms are used in America?

don't use the term ROFL, you will confuse epickoala and ThylacineAlive.

Americans use "Asiatic" remember.
