Yes Molly was born at chester a year or so after rafters (Morris) in 2006 because I bottled fed rafters and am sure Molly was around then.

So she's either a hybrid or Chester saying that Margaret is their first rothschild female is wrong? what does (Morris) mean by the way?

The staff named him, because the "Name the new baby giraffe" competition took to long, so he effectively had a name for the public and a name for the keepers.

Oh ok, never knew that. If you find anything out about the giraffe when you next go I would be interested to hear, thanks.

Molly was born on 13th November 2006 to Thorn and Kelly, she is a pure Rothschild's and was parent reared.

I was the one who posted that the rhino calf would be moved. this information was from a rhino team keeper, and was later shown to be an error, (or a change of plan).

how close is the rhino birth now have they done any more work to the house i was there the other week and seen them putting a lot of sand in the back pen is it true they have a second rhino due to give birth next year if so just shows give them the right rhino stock and they will breed puts all those negative comments early in the year to rest /////////

The first rhino is due in september but it could all ways come early. The second May??? I think.

10 YEARS since the last birth at chester for the number of Rhino's it has held in those years is not a great record!

No molly was born this year but DNS. Chester has Faye, Kay and Samara (Hybrid).

I thought there plan was to move the hybrid out and bring two pure in?
Samara has gone to Blair rummond and been replaced by Aoife who is a pure Rothschilds and related to Kelly and Faye.
As for the Rhinos i believe the plan is now to leave her in the house that she is in,as she knows the house and routine in it.

Ema (i think that is spelt right). It was mentioned on here a while back as it was anouced at the AGM.

News from 11th August 2008

There are 1.5 giraffes on show.

An African Crested Porcupine is a recent arrival and can be seen in the Children's Farm area.

There are two tigers, one was outside and one inside, they both look like Sumatran.

No sign of the warthogs again, so I don't know if they have successfully bred or not.

The Writhed (white-headed) hornbill hen has left the nest, no sign of any young unfortunately. The Tropical Relam Taricitics are now by the corcodiles and their old aviary houses Luzon Bleeding Heart Pigeons and a passerine which I can't remember.

Edwards' Pheasants share the Great Indian Hornbill aviary in the elephant house. The other Great Indian is now in the old bird house.

The Rancho Redondo Frogs (Lithobates (=Rana) viviparius) have bred.

The female crocodile is eager to mate.

Gardeners were at work in the blue-throated Macaw aviary.

Thanks for the update Rob.

On my visit last week, the warthogs were snuggled up together and the female still looked quite plump, so it surely can't be much longer now?

Suprised the zoo is going back into Porcupines, is the Childrens Ffarm a temporary place for them.

Great if the female Tiger has arrived though.

Could the porcupines be part of one of the new African aviaries? I think there might be conflict putting them into the Ground Hornbill one, but I'm sure they could go in the walkthrough as long as they were seperated from the visitors by a low wall.

Could the porcupines be given part of the Lechwe paddock, it seems a very large space for only Ground Hornbills.

Only a portion of the paddock will be the ground hornbills, so yes, perhaps. I think that the remaining paddock will probably be used for a new species of ungulate though- If I remember correctly the plans for the hornbill aviary also had a new stable near the meerkats.

Oh good. I dream of Thompsons Gazelles or Gerenuk but i think Dama Gazelles are a possibility.
