Think that I didn't word my last question properly - whoops ! Only ever seen 1 male & female red pandas in the 1 enclosure.

3 questions -
1. - Lushi's age ?
2. - Can 2 female red pandas live in the same enclosure ?
3. - Assuming the new female is. of a young age and if a young male is introduced - could Lushi stay in the same enclosure or would she be just put off show or moved ?

Chester has one of the nicest red panda enclosures in Europe and I've seen quite a few. Thanks.

1) Ancient more than likely will not be around by the end of the year!
2) Plenty of places have kept single sex groups over the years with no problems!
3) See answer for question 1!

As for it being the nicest Red Panda enclosure in Europe give me Heidlebergs, over Chester any day,but thats because they are mixed with a decent hoofstock species(Tufted Deer).

In fact, looking at the Red Panda studbook on the Rotterdam Zoo website, which is a few years out of date, I have a feeling Lushui is the oldest red panda in the country.

Thank you TeaLovingDave for that lovely post ! - She's a fave with me as was Pali ! 1 question - I know that she is getting on but am I correct in thinking that she could be in the same enclosure as a new young female and I assume a new young male ( which CZ knows now or has mind) arrives- she . would need to be moved off show or could 3 co-exist (possibly think not).! - looking forward to VZ in a few weeks. Thank you

A few typo errors since reading this on phone !

Hello Pandagirl :D
I have seen collections that have 2 females and one male in the same enclosure - I think Welsh mountain zoo actually did that for a while although I don't know if they were related (i.e. mother & daughter) but they were certainly all adult when I saw them.
I'd expect Lushui to move on to a 'retirement' home as my suspicion is that she is beyond breeding now - Lily was her last viable offspring. That would pave the way to bring in a new male and establish a young breeding pair at chester (mmm Red Panda Cubs - how can that not make you grin!)

Been to Chester today, both female Red Panda, Nima and Lushui, are sharing the one enclosure.

Also spotted an Orang on the old "off show" island, presumably one of the Blackpool lot.

Good news about the new panda they are one of my favs glad lushui has got company now tho the long term aim I guess is a new male so they can breed
Cubs would be great :)

Just reading the zoo magazine, anyone know where the Nature reserve is going, and the rough size it is going to e, this is the first I have heard of it

I think it will be the area around the pond adjacent to Flag Lane. Roughly to the north of the Butterfly house.

Chester Zoo will get a new giraffebull from Germany Leipzig Zoo.
MERU was Born 03.04.10 (MAX x ASHANTI).
He will replace DOTO that died in the beginning of this year!

Visited today, was very busy. Managed to see Nima the new female Red Panda. Also saw a Banteng calf had been born in the last few days. Caught a glimpse of the Blackpool Orangs and was lucky enough to see both Servals being fed :)

Caught a glimpse of the Blackpool Orangs

Does anyone know roughly how long the Orangs may stay before their Blackpool enclosure is ready for them? Or whether any of the females have been put with Tuan while they are there?

Visited today, a fence is under constuction in the scimitar-horned oryx paddock, the northern boundry of the Islands developmnt.

A lot of animals hiding out of the wind, and the tigers were shut inside because of the weather.

Didn't see a single bongo.
