Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news

Only one echiadna born in europe survived (Saarbruecken 1995).

That sounds about right; I knew nothing other than the date for the Saarbrücken birth, but I was pretty sure that if the 2004 birth at Frankfurt had survived I would have heard about it.

There is some peculiar reproductive behaviour in echidna. You really need a colony to be able to breed as in the past individuals at best were just paired up ... well breeding was not what it should / could be. Here is hoping we learn from past mistakes.

The sexes of the Tierpark echidnas are not known as yet..but for sure they are from a second importation more firmly established as captive animals. And on the same thread the Gerenuks are 2.2.

I thought the TP only received 2 Gerenuks not 4. Of course it would be amazing if they received 2,2!!!

In a bit we will know more about the exact number and sex ratio of the gerenuks, they will receive an enclosure in the Tierpark rather soon! They will inherit the former enclosure of the Mhorr gazella which is presently restructured to meet their needs.

The mhorr gazell and the addax went to the former enclosure of the Arabian Oryx and may well be kept together in the future (it is a double exhibit though and they could also remein seperated or only be seperated if necessary). So consequently the Oryx went to the former enclosure of the Addax.

Some good news: A new species and a new mixed-species exhibit at the same time :)

I only know that the enclosure is presently being remodeled so it will better suit their needs. I wouldn't imagine this to take longer than a few weeks. So you may well be lucky. But I can't say anything for sure as I don't have any access to first hand information. But I'm sure as soon as the Gerenuks are on their new enclosure the News will spread on here ;)

Even for someone whose first love is not hoofstock, such as myself, the prospect of Gerenuk at Tierpark is an alluring one!

Some news from Tierpark Berlin :
1 White-lipped of Thorold's deer born
2-1 Cape buffalo's born
another Mishmi takin born
1-2 Kulans born with another one pregnant
1-1 Manitoba wapiti born
1 Vietnam sika born
1 Addax born

The Gerenuks are in their enclosure now. So far they only are in the fenced off part in the back. But they can already be seen. They are beautiful animals.

The Tierpark now also displays some small mammals in the sunbear-building that apparently are unique in Europe (German Name: Himalaya-Zwerghörnchen).

That might be Himalayan Striped Squirrel (Tamiops mcclellandii) or Orange-bellied Himalayan Squirrel (Dremomys lokriah) then - Himalaya-Zwerghörnchen literally means Himalaya Dwarf Squirrel in English, but all the Asian species called Dwarf Squirrel in English live in Indonesia so would not fit with the Himalaya part of the name.

--edit--

Looks like someone has added the former species to ZTL :)

ZootierlisteHomepage - Himalayan Striped Squirrel (Tamiops mcclellandii) - very nice! Thanks for the update!

I was at the Tierpark on Saturday, and neither the gerenuks nor these rather nice-looking squirrels were on show (although there were some animal-carrying boxes - closed up - in one of the small mammal units in the sun bear house). At pretty any other zoo, missing out on such things would be a source of frustration - but, in this case, there's so much to see, and so much that is so wonderful, that I don't feel too annoyed to have missed them.

until the gerenuks have been released into their enclosure, it appears you need bins to really see them ;)
If interested in photographic updates on mammals/birds at Berlin Zoo and Tierpark, it is worth checking this flickr users account from time to time. She is evidently aware of news (e.g. new arrivals/enclosures) and seems to visit both at least once a month, adding new photo sets regularly

@Sooty: It's good that you enjoyed your visit anyways but I'm still a bit sorry you missed them by so few days. Actually I was there on Saturday myself (and some of the days before) and waited impatiently to finally see them.

I know Christina (the flickr user Condor refers to) from a German zoo Forum. She is one of the users with the most up to date pictures and also somewhat professional at taking Pictures from as far as I can judge it (I am rather lousy at taking pictures not mentioning all the trouble of uploading them). So you are well-advised to check out her account if you want some recent pictures from Berlin's zoos.

Thank you! It was a great day to be at the Tierpark - the weather was perfect, and lots of animals were out and about. I arrived at opening time, left at closing time - so that's ten hours, thanks to the very sensible operating hours of German zoos - and still (by a long distance) didn't get to see everything I'd have liked to have seen.
