Some brief updates:

A gold takin was born some days/ weeks ago! Now it's 8 gold takins altogether.

The Brehm-building has received new "furniture": Some cats now have huge trunks or climbing constructions that reach further up than the previously highest platforms. They apparently enjoy this very much as some sat on the most elevated spots closely observing the visitors. A staff member told me that they just used the building crane while the windows were replaced. Well done. I hope this will be the model for the outside enclosures as well. By the way: The news magazine "Berliner Tiere" featured a rendering of the new outside boxes. Instead of 7 old boxes it will be 3 large (at least 4 times the size of an old one) and a slightly smaller one (double size of the old ones) for each side. The prairie dogs are to be relocated to the left front of the main entrance (near the huge lion sculptures) so they will greet all visitors that come to the Brehm-building from that direction. The article also states that we might have to wait for October for the interior to be completed (the last information indicated a proper reopening sometime between april and june). Bad news and this means the new contruction site will not succeed but add to the present one. But I just hope it will be nice in the end...

The visitor area of the polar bear enclosure is to be completed this Spring and the eagle aviary is to be started by that time.

The weather is still quite lousy by the way. We had quite some new snow this morning. The easter season may well see less ticket sales than usually...

On their web-site Tierpark Berlin published the list of animal-births for March 2013, VERY impresive !
Hatched :

red-footed tortoise 4

turkmenian eagle owl 1

born :

vietnam sika 4
rothschild giraffe 1

wild boar 8
oman wild cat 1 nest
levante vole 25
lowland paca 1
dwarf mara 2
patas monkey 2
silvery marmoset 2
and a large number domesticated animals ( goats, sheep, a donkey, rabbits ).

Another female gold takin calf was born TODAY!!!

The grey kangaroos and the bennets also have young ones (some still in the bags).

After a ( very long ) break a Black lemur has been born at Tierpark Berlin. The previous last birth was in 1998 !

It seems that there are 3 Clouded leopards born at Tierpark Berlin
Also an - to me - unknown number of Java leopards.

No, both birth should have occured last/ this week !

Not even announced on the German zoo threads.

Clouded leopard in 2012 was a singleton cub.

Any idea how big the litters are?

The Javan leopards need more founders .... There is one in the Phillippines (Avilon) and several in Indonesian zoos on Java (apart from TSI Bogor)

I have no inomation on the cubs.

But there is some News:

Blaszkiewitz is not going to be released, but it is not sure whether his contract is to be continued after it runs out in 2014.

There is an update for the masterplan 2020+:
-The North American themed area is to include a Native Indian village and a cable way/ chair lift rather than a boat ride. In Addition to the already known species like bold eagles, beavers etc. the racoons are to move here as well (10 mio€).
-The main entrance is to be modernized and enhanced with new services (4 mio)
-a Play village is to constructed near the area with the playground and the farm animals (5 mio).

The glass element for the polar bear enclosure is going to be integrated soon. The Brehm-building still is dominated by a massive building site even though most Windows appear to be in place by now. There is no activity at the eagle aviary yet.

Is the "North American themed area" to be built on the zoo's higher ground area, next to the existing European and Northern Asian sections? Will the cable way/chair lift run down to near the giraffes or down the opposite side?

Is there a map of the 2020 masterplan online?

Yes, it's planned as an Extension of the mountain area.

No, unfortunately there isn't any map (as far as I know).

The window has been integrated. It doesn't exactly look impressive rather a bit out of place. We will have to wait if it allows for new perspectives and encounters, but so far I don't like it. The bears are not back on the enclosure yet, but this should happen rather soon.

The mountain reedbucks received a largely extended enclosure (double size). It also was enhanced by a hill and in combination with some really old and large trees it is a very nice enclosure.

There also have been some births but nothing really unexpected (so far the takins and the javas, and clouded leopards are the most spectacular births I know of - the latter have not been officially confirmed, though)

Great news from Tierpark Berlin : 2 Chaco pecaris have been born, most probebly an European first-breeding !
Another nice birth is that of a Red-handed tamarin.

And the birth of 2 Javanese leopards as well as an unknown number of clouded leopards has been confirmed. If we add the Gold takins (one in March and one in April) it has been an awesome spring!

Animals born at Tierpark Berlin during April 2013 :
2 Red-necked wallabies
1 Palm flying fox
1 Black lemur
1 Barbary macaque
1 Patas
6 Chinese dwarf hamsters
2 Chacoan maras
2 Java leopards
1 nest of Clouded leopards
1 nest of Skunks
2 Chaco pecaris
1 Llama
1 Alpaca
1 Sambar
1 Hog deer
3 Pere David's deers
2 Persian fellow deers
1 Mhorr gazelle
1 Gold takin
7 Mouflons
and several domestic animals.

The Bearded vulture born March 18 will be brought to Andalusia in June. Goal is to re-introduce the bird into the wild.
Since 1988 the Tierpark Berlin provided a total of 20 captive-bred Bearded vultures to the several re-introduction-projects across Europe ! :)
