@Yassa: It is indeed very annoying for such a badly-funded zoo to lose some 120.000€, but it also is rather easy to make formal mistakes if you are to receive funds this way. I'm not sure in how far he himself even is to blame and if this mistake (as well as all other potential mistakes) would have been avoided by most of the people who criticise him. It also is the first such instance at the Tierparl I am aware of (but I'm also not sure if they funded many other projects this way). Politicians for instance lose money for communities on a virtually daily basis because of formal/ legal and other mistakes and most institutions cannot

And please be careful what you have other people say: The keeper did not say that she enjoyed the fact how many cats live in the building. She was merely talking about the point that in her eyes larger outside cages by themselves don't make a big difference as the building is well-suited for keeping cats as it is and the major issues for improvement lie elsewhere. And while I cheer for bigger outside enclosures (which probably will also mean a reduction of species) I still don't agree that the cats seem to suffer at present. The people from the German forum who I mentioned watch the cats far more frequently than I and also share this opinion.

And dare I ask what they are saying?

Yassa has already listed some of the points that triggered the criticism this time. Unfortunately they are only the tip of the iceberg.
I don't know how familiar you are with German, I could send you some links via PN otherwise.

No I dont understand German sadly and although I'd like to read what has been written I do not wish to trigger any arguements on here.
I just want what is best for the animals in any zoo, or at least the best that a zoo can make it with the money they have.

@Yassa & chizlit: Blaszkiewitz stated that he didn't say the thing on the christmas gratification (the accusation rests on a memory log) and that the staff was never offended about the 0,1-"joke" in 15 years - he apparently also used it for actual babies by staff and according to a German forum user occasionally also for men). By the way: It's not the first time such critique is publicly communicated just before his contract runs out. It was the same in 2008. It's very onbvious that some people don't like him (for various reasons) and we will have to wait what is to come from this all.

For the time being, I would be careful to accept such news before the staff members have been questioned. They will have a chance to state their views in a propper setting and will receive special assistance for any issues of discrimination in the near future. If the claims are true, however, Blaszkiewitz may have to go (in June or July 2014, if not sooner). In that case, I hope for a decent successor. it's not an easy job (funding, media and political support are just three difficult aspects which particularly concern the zoos in the German capital).

The Tirepark received 2,2 gold takins from Liberec zoo. Now they have 4,3 gold takins (a young bull left some time ago)!

So finally some (very) good news after the bad press about Blaszkiewitz. By the way: He will stay for some longer. The charges will be checked and all staff members will receive more assistance if they encounter inappropriate comments/ treatment etc. The present contract runs out in 2014 anyways. In spring they have to decide if they want to renew it.

Two Sichuan takins and three Yellow-footed rock wallabys arrived. Takins came from Moscow.

The rock wallabies came from LA. I suppose some females will be included. So far the Tierpark had 2,0 after one was killed by a fox (the enclosure now is fortified and foxes can be caught or shot...)

The Tierpark also saw some births (e.g. 2 baribals, 1 spectacled bear, 2 binturongs, 1 small maras and various ungulates). The Margays are on display now (one of the glas boxes at the brehm building). Apparently 2 male sudan-cheetahs seem to replace the female one.

Blaszkiewitz is still in hospital and apparently he even fell into coma (if the media information is correct).

Good to hear about the margays. The 2 male cheetahs are ex-Chester.

Apparantly, the sechuan-takins were NOT from Moscow. They came from San Diego and the young one from Moscow is still to come (perhaps in March). According to a German forum user there are four (presumably) independent lines that run together in Tierpark Berlin (Rotterdam, Moscow 1, Moscow 2 and San Diego). Very good news!!! Now they only need to breed as successfully as the mishmis do. But the staff should be experienced enough to bring the breeding to success.

As I understand inbreeding is a problem in all Takin-subspecies kept in Europe and America and import of new animals from Asia is very problematic. Is it not possible to import ( frozen ) samen from some Chinese zoos and to try AI to inproof the bloodlines - with hoofstock this should be possible I guess.

Some brief news:

- I have read that Blaszkiewitz is doing better now. He may be released soon but he will definitely need some months of rehab...

-Cheetahs from Chester on display. Sounds funny ;)

Blaszkiewitz was released this morning. Apparantly he even turned up at the tierpark to check his desk and speak with some of his staff.

The proposed changes at the Brehm-building have been approved by the city government, shortly after Blaskiewitz got released and spoke with the responsible people.

Already at the beginning of February the Tierpark received an animal-transport from the Philippines : 2 young pairs of Palawan Leopard cats - bred at Zoo Avilon - are picking up the Tierparks tradition in keeping Leopard cats althrough this subspecies hadn't been kept before at the Tierpark. These 4 Prionailurus bengalensis heaneyi are at the moment the only ones in an European zoo.
