Elephants coming.

From their website it appears there is now an advertising campaign in preparation for the arrival of Elephants- in the form of a large mobile model Elephant doing the rounds of various strategic points in Bristol city and the surrounding areas. I wonder if they dare park it outside the Zoo?:D

In the 'Elephant Eden' section it also puts the question 'where are the elephants coming from?' but then doesn't answer it, stating that 'certain/some elephants have been identified and are being considered' and that 'the public will be notified shortly when a decision is made'. As others have hinted, that may be the official line but it may actually be a case of getting whatever they can though....

In some of the blurb it also hints that both African and Asian Elephants could be kept-both at the same time?(its a bit unclear on that). Then it says they 'will get several cows and one male initially'. Again confusing, though obviously there will be elephants of some sort there soon, they say in July.

Just wondering if the elephants have arrived yet, I assume not as I am sure it would have been mentioned. Does anyone know where these elephants are actually coming from, and are they Asian or African, male or female?

With the risk of African elephants passing Elephant Herpes Virus to Asian elephants I would imagine that the EEP coordinator would advise against mixing the two species. I know places that do get away with it (Riddles Elephant Sanctuary for example), but there is thought to be a link between Asian elephants having still born calves when exposed EHV.

Given the fact in recent years this park has turned down the chance,to keep pure groups of both Giraffe and Zebra, thus when they do bred they bred sub-species crosses,I cannot see the minor fact of passing a virus from one species to the other will stop them, from keeping both species if they had the chance!

There is something not right here, years ago many zoos emerged in the U.K. with main purpose of making money for their owners, there was no suggestion at all of any conservation efforts, if the animal died, simple, get onto the dealer and get a replacement, there was hardly any mention of education apart from sticking up some label outside the animal's cage telling you its scientific name and its country of origin, if you were lucky, these poky little places have now all gone fortunately. Quite a few zoos in the U.K. have closed in recent years, few, although not all will not be missed. What have they been replaced with?. Monkey World in Dorset, although officially not classed as a zoo but a rescue centre for primates, I don't think there is anybody who can question the good work that has been, and continues to be done at this place. South Lakes Wild Animal Park, they have limited space, although I understand this is soon to be enlarged, all housing is of a home made style, with too many animals living in this limited space, including mixed exhibits of animals which are considered by many unsuitable to be sharing mutual accommodation. Noah's Ark. kicked out of B.I.A.Z.A. for obtaining tigers from a circus and not exactly telling the truth about their place of origin. I have not visited this place, all I know of it is from what I have read and seen on here, it does not make attractive reading, particularly from posters who I think always know what they are talking about, not bothered about breeding pure bred animals, a giraffe is a giraffe, a zebra is a zebra as far as the people with their admission money in the hands are concerned, this is progress?, my opinion is these two establishments are no better than the seaside zoological attractions of yesteryear in a very twenty first century way of course!

Elephants.

Elephants must be arriving very soon now- or even already there- if they are to tie in the school holidays, as seemed to be the plan. Any news?

From Noahs Ark Facebook page in response to someones enquiry about whether the elephants will be there by the second week of August..

Hi ****, we expect so. We're hoping to have a fixed date very soon, with arrival due in the next 2-3 weeks. The elephants we are taking on have been agreed. We'll put any news updates on Facebook and our website. Thanks

Are they not coming overseas?

No one on here knows where they are getting them from yet- at one stage their website said 'from within the UK' but of course that may still be right, or not, as the case may be.

Because they are non BIAZA (or is it EAZA?) members, most of their larger animals have had to come from less reputable sources like circuses or non-member Zoos. I know of no elephants in the UK in situations like that.

I do have a theory on where they may be coming from, but will wait and see what actually happens.

I would suggest it's a fairly safe bet they're not coming from the Uk, but of course i'm probably wrong!

Well there is 1 collection in the UK that has a problem with 1.3 African Elephants, that it needs to move because of problems within the herd!
