Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013-2014

A spoof would imply sebbe was doing it for our amusement - scam is undoubtably the word for it :p

Thanks for the laugh TLD!

Thylo [if I may call you that?]; you do realise the whole Myanmar/Sebbe 67 thing was a scam/spoof/not real?

You can. Oh okay, I suspected that after I saw that the thread had closed but wasn't sure. I did plan on reading the thread all the way through, by the way, but it was really late so decided to wait until today to do it. But thanks for telling me in advance. So what was Sebbe67 attempting to accomplish with this scam? And if it's in the thread I'll just read it later then.

We haven't a clue; they never returned after being called out on proof of their lies, as you will read.

The biggest giveaway that it was all a work of fiction, of course, is that if a zoochatter really did own a collection including marbled cat, you would have heard me gushing about it long ago ;)

he returned as kiglezi. He hasn't posted under that account since I called him out on that as well (see in the New Guinea forum) but he still regularly logs on under the name to pm other members (presumably the ones who don't know who he is!)

he has multiple lives all over the internet. He's just a sad man with no real life. The saddest part of it is that he obviously is very educated in animal life, and he could easily participate as a real person instead of imaginary ones. Considering the number of accounts he maintains on lots of forums and the amount of work he must put into them my guess is that he is actually house-bound in some way.

So not a scam as such, more a desire to be something he is not.

But enough on this thread about Sebastian! I leave in a couple of days (as far as any of you know, mwahahaha).

Enjoy the trip Chlidonias looking forward to your posts. And if you are bored in tracking difficult to spot mammals maybe you can take a shot at Rhodonessa caryophyllacea. As how difficult can it be to spot a large duck with a pink head?
yes indeed, also crested shelduck! I'll be keeping my eye out for any odd-looking waterfowl. And any of those funny cows should I find myself in Cambodia.

So how was Christchurch? Are you in Wellington now? Checking out the zoo?
well I went from Hokitika to Reefton where one of my sisters lives, and I left some things in her garage. Then I caught the bus to Chch and a plane to Wellington the same evening, so I didn't really do anything in Chch at all (although I did pass the Square: the front of the Cathedral is gone, the Aquarium building is entirely gone as I've said before, but the historical Post Office building where the I-Site used to be is still standing).

My other sister lives in Tawa (outside Wellington) and this is where all my other belongings are stored (mostly books but also some of my Asian travel gear) so I had to come and pick up what I need, move everything else to a proper storage facility because she's sick of having my boxes filling her garage, get a late Typhoid shot and some other stuff. I do plan on going to the zoo to see Hero HQ and the Asian Precinct but I have to fit it in around other things that are more important.

How are you determining your priorities? Since when is a shot more important than a zoo visit! :D

If you do visit though, please review Hero HQ (and the rest) on here before you go. Just in case you do die from rabies or something in Asia.

I shall do my best for a review and photos. I've got a couple of very cool zoos/aquariums to visit at the start of August too (I'm hoping to see my very first armadillo, fingers crossed!)

These would be in Hong Kong? Unless you are seeing giant armadillos, I'm more excited to hear about pangolins!

Being so focused on all the cool birdlife you guys are not sharing with us, it is so easy that some species we considered to be standard are not available down under (I always considered Okapi to be one of the boring standard species as my home zoos as a child were Antwerp and Rotterdam).

And you're going more north then I expected it seems. Enjoy the travel!!!

today I moved all my boxes of animal books (27 boxes!) out of my sister's garage to a storage facility. I got a lift to the place with the moving van, which was a little awkward because the driver was a Creationist! I sort of just sat there nodding agreeably as he commented on how robots were created and that proves humans were too, how there is no fossil record, how the sun proves Creation, how humans were "meant" to be immortal, etc etc. I learned long ago you can't try debating with a Creationist, because if you don't accept their viewpoint then you just have a closed mind.

After stacking the boxes inside the storage room I went into town and shopped around the various Outdoor shops (Kathmandu, Mountain Design, etc) trying to find various bits and pieces. Tomorrow I'm going to Plimmerton to see if the shore plovers are around. I might have time for the zoo as well.

Creationists crack me up. My old housemate went off the deep end with creationism. He started bringing home scientific papers proving that carbon 14 dating is inaccurate as proof that the world is 6,000 years old. Anyway, how did that topic come up with the driver?

well I inadvertently paved the way by saying what my line of work is, that all the boxes were filled with animal books and that I was going travelling to look for wildlife. But I rather suspect he draws any conversation towards that topic. He gave me an informative pamphlet at the end in case I had missed any of what he was telling me. He was a perfectly nice guy though.

Today I got a Typhoid shot and stocked up on Malaria tablets, then took the train up to Plimmerton to see if the shore plovers were around. It was low tide so I only saw four or five of them. At high tide they all sit up at the top of the beach right by the footpath, but at low tide they bob in and out amongst the jaggedy rocks that become exposed. A lady came past with a little dog and asked me if I knew where the plovers were, so I showed her and let her look through my binoculars at them. It's quite neat having such a rare bird gathering right by the township and how ordinary people are taking such an interest in them. (Shore plovers became extinct on mainland NZ after Europeans introduced rats and cats and so on, and they survived only on the Chatham Islands way off to the east of NZ. It's one of those species that when I was growing up I never thought I'd see, but now it is possible for someone just out walking their dog to stop by and have a look at a flock of them. Pretty cool. There are a few photos in the NZ Wildlife gallery taken by me and zooboy28 of the Plimmerton birds from other visits).

Then I took the train to Porirua and bought some more travelling items, and then all the way to Wellington and went to the zoo, for which see the NZ part of the forum when I post some comments later.

Tomorrow is departure day.

Can't wait for the Asian part of your trip to start, I really hope you find some of your target species. I know of one you want to see (unless your plans have changed since you told me, it was a while back... :p) and it's going to be a tricky one to spot! ;)

yup that's the main target species, but the plan of attack has changed completely and now I'll be looking in an entirely different country to give me a better chance.

Nice! :D
I'll say no more and let others keep on guessing. I'm intrigued as to what other mammals you want to see as well though. :p
