The name of the baby Gorilla seems to be just an aside in this short article. I believe this baby is female like Miliki's, but though its 8(?) months old now, Blackpool still don't seem to have made any official announcement about its name or sex.

Maybe it's a bit of a Namoki and they're not sure :)

Its their 2nd baby so they've got another to compare with. ;) I think in Namoki's case she was mis-sexed as a baby and then probably no-one ever checked again for three years...they must have got a surprise.:)

Belfast baby.

Male baby born at Belfast Zoo on 3rd August. This is the first offspring for both parents m.Gugas.x f. Kwanza. Its also genetically a very important birth as 'Gugas'(born 1994) is the last(afaik) wildborn Gorilla to enter the European captive population, having arrived illegally in Portugal and was then sent to the Stuttgart nursery.

From reading this I fear 'Vimoto' may now be too far gone to be able to save him. It seems the female 'Rosi' is self-mutilating herself because of his condition, rather than having the same thing herself but I'm not quite clear there.

Shasha at Munster (ex Howletts) has given birth to her first baby very recently. Everything going to plan so far :)

News from 29.8.2013: silverback Vimoto has received a probable first in a - perhaps life saving - bloodtransfusion from the female Rosi (they checked bloodgroups and these were thankfully compatible and since she had to be sedated too for treatment of her self-multilatory behavior and injury ... the bloodtransfusion was done). At least he has come through this one OK. Fingers crossed the male will pull through!!!

Wuppertal/Port Lympne/Munich

Fingers crossed for Vimoto in Wuppertal! I've been following the news over the last days, and after the successful blood transfusion the veterinarians now are confident they can save his life.

Here is a choice of my photos from Port Lympne Wild Animal Park. Due to the distance between the enclosures and the visitors' area it's hard to take good pictures. Plus in the afternoon the sun isn't your friend. But you can see a few photos of famous Ambam walking upright (bipedally). - Port Lympne currently houses two bachelor groups. The younger ones - mostly blackbacks - are doing fine, but from the older ones two silverbacks had to be separated due to aggression and are not on display. See GorillaGenealogy for details. Photos are from August 8.

Postscript: Has anyone posted yet that Bagira's baby in Munich was ID'd as a girl, and was named Nafi? I saw her a week ago and she was doing fine. Her mother is not overly protective of her so she is already allowed to play with her brother Kajolu. The way she is being brought up, she'll be independent quite soon I think.

Thanks for the link. Your photo of the notice about Djala's group move to Africa says one can look on their Facebook/Twitter to find out more about the new group of Gorillas that will replace them in the 'Palace of Apes'. But I can't see anything there about this yet.:(

Vimoto- wonderful if they can save him, as it sounded as if he was virtually at death's door. I do hope they can succeed.

When I spoke to the keeper he said they haven't yet decided who will move in there.

Twelve year old male 'Otana' (Kouillou x Tamba) has gone from Howletts to Melbourne, Australia.
