South Lakes Wild Animal Park 23 new species for South Lakes!

Knowing Gill he will likely claim to have the extinct 11th species and hope no one questions it :p

Sorry, not that up on birds! I'll post the picture I took! And yes agree - he seems to do the same with his giraffe's - he once 'tried' to tell me there was no subspecies of giraffe when I questioned what exactly he had ;)

Technically there might not be any species of giraffes as new evidence points towards them all being separate species.

:) It's a nice looking bird and it's definitely new - I hadn't seen it before and we go on a fairly regular basis.

I can't remember exactly what happened with the giraffes - but some new ones appeared and he claimed them to be a rarer kind than they actually were. It seemed to me that there was some strange differences in size/markings of the herd.

There are some baby capabara at the moment. We had an interesting time watching the babies run off from the bears when they came too near and even otters that were living in the same enclosure. Let's hope that no-one get's too hungry in there!

South Lakes does actually have a rarer kind of giraffe than the rest of the UK. They are the only zoo in the UK with Kordofan Giraffes (Giraffa antiquorum), though they are kept with hybrids.

Well some individuals have gotten a bit hungry in that enclosure before and let's just say that there just to be more species in there;)

Not quite - at one point, quite a lot of places believed they held Peralta Giraffe, a very rare subspecies, but recent research has shown that all the individuals in question in Europe were Kordofan Giraffe, which are pretty rare in captivity themselves. This includes the "Peralta" giraffes at South Lakes, which David Gill continues to insist are the aforesaid subspecies and certainly not Kordofan :p

Of course, anyone who corrects him is banned from the South Lakes facebook page, and the fact he holds a rare subspecies doesn't stop him mixing the individuals in question with fertile hybrid giraffes, risking contamination of the genetic line..... :p

Don't hope too hard, or you will be sorely disappointed :p did you take a headcount on the babies? If so, return in a week and try again.....

There were six babies... I'll let you know if there are still six when the zoo changes to 'free' entry - we probably won't go again now before that happens ;)

I heard on the grapevine that the wolves will be arriving soon... they best get the enclosure built post haste. I was glad to hear that the elephant plans have been put on the back burner. I think that some of the cats definately need to have a bit more space - too much sharing going on :(

I seriously doubt there will be. But let us know if there are any Capybara left!

Ah yes, the "Arctic" Wolves.

Wait! This zoo wants elephants!

Ha ha ha! Can I ask what may be a stupid question (I am not a zoo employee or animal trained, just an avid zoo and animal fan) - how does Gill get away with this? Does he not have to adhere to certain standards? Surely the zoo licencing people aren't really keen on these mixed exhibits?!

A question for the ages, that one....

hehe

I know you were joking, I was playing along;) Good one, though.

They all say that :p

I do like the zoo, if you look beyond some of the things that need fixing and at how much money is raised for conservation and of course the collection of animals, which is vast for a small kind of place in the middle of nowhere. But some things there are bad - I've been to Beijing Zoo though - man alive SLWAP is a palace compared to that place!

Wonder what he'll put the Wolves in with? Does he have any Sheep?
