"World War Z" the novel is a spectacular classic. It is an examination of how civilization breaks down in the face of a catastrophe and what the geopolitical implications are. It is told as a series of interviews 10 years after the zombie apocalypse. There are chapters involving a blind samurai in Japan, a thrilling submarine drama, and a hilarious imagining of a zombie attack on a celebrity-filled fortress.

"World War Z" the movie is like a 175 million dollar subpar episode of "The Walking Dead".

as I understand it, the movie was based on the title of the book. That is all.

They didn't even include the commentary on conventional warfare (ie the using semi-auto's and the lobo)
 
hey nanoboy, remind us again how much it costs to go see a movie in Australia. I just saw the new Hobbit movie today, on its day of release, for 14 Ringgit which is about NZ$7 – which is what, like five Australian dollars? Now, I know what you're thinking. I'm in Malaysia. It was just some guy re-enacting the movie with sock puppets while crouching behind a cardboard box outside Krispy Kreme. But you would be wrong. It was the actual movie, in a real movie theatre, in a giant multi-storey mall. I don't know how many floors the mall has – I stopped counting after I passed a mountain goat on the escalators – but the theatre alone was on four floors! There was a theme park in there as well, with a roller coaster. A proper honest-to-god roller coaster which you could watch whizzing around from the levels below. Without fear of hyperbole I reckon there were probably half a million shops in the mall, most of them fashion outlets (clothes, accessories, etc). It was so decadent there was even a Redemption Counter!! It was unmanned unfortunately so I could not get redemption.

And that is my review of my visit to the mall.

The Hobbit: the Desolation Of Smaug

So it must be a year since the first Hobbit movie? I haven't seen it since it was in the theatres so I can't compare it directly to the second part. I liked this installment, although it did sort of drag a bit. No singing either (except the end song over the credits – by Ed Sheeran!? What?). There was some rather ropey CGI: I mean there was some great CGI but also some very bad CGI as well. Some scenes may as well have been cartoons for all the live elements in them (i.e. none!). Fortunately Smaug was well done, and they must have spent most of their CGI budget on the fire-breathing because that looked fantastic. There was not as much juvenile and innapropriate humour as in the first Hobbit so someone must have reigned Peter Jackson in on that. The best humour came from Martin Freeman (Bilbo) who does his role extremely well. The New Zealand scenery was not used to the best advantage. There were parts with great scenic shots but often it was overlain with a lot of CGI elements, or was even entirely CGI. I'm not sure how others will view that but as a Nzer who is used to what it really looks like, a lot of it is obviously and poorly faked which is a shame because I feel like what really made The Lord Of The Rings movies work was the (mostly real) scenery.

Gandalf is in it of course, looking even older than ever. Legolas is back for no good reason other than the ladies like him, and he is also looking older (do Elves age backwards like wizards do?). Nobody's favourite wizard Radagast returns with his god-damn rabbit sled – does Peter Jackson not read public opinion or does he just have George Lucas style “Jar Jar Binks Blindness”? Speaking of Peter Jackson, he is the very first character seen in the movie. Then there's, um, Stephen Fry....? Okay.

Best character is sexy lady Elf, Tauriel, played by Evangeline Lilly. I never particularly liked her as Kate on Lost, or in anything else she's been in really, but she makes a damn fine lady Elf!!

Verdict: not fantastic, not bland, somewhere in the middle. Say 7 out of 10.

Last minute thought: isn't Thorin the head dwarf just really boring? I'm not sure if it's the character or the actor or what, but he's not the best.

Too may days recently spent crawling around jungles, forests, rivers and giant Buddha's in search of wildlife.

You'll be fine after a few days in Thailand ;) ;) nudge nudge.

I don't know what it's called. It's just a mall. From the outside it just looks like one of the other skyscrapers around it. It's just down the road from my hostel -- the woman at the reception when I asked if there was a cinema nearby said "yes, many." "Where is the nearest one?" "Oh, around here....and here..." she said making vague circles on the city map. So I just walked down the road until I found a sign for a mall and then wandered around inside until I found a theatre.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean at all in any capacity whatsoever!!! :cool:
 
There's also a movie being made of the 1980's TV series The Equalizer, with Denzel Washington starring as Robert McCall.
