Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2014

Does anyone know if the Damaras already at Manor House originated from Blackpool Zoo?

The Manor House male originated from Colchester Zoo while the female is the mother of Colchester's stallion 'Troy'. I'm not sure if she ever lived at Colchester or not.

Even more exciting, the Damara herd at Colchester will be replaced with a breeding herd of maneless zebra, a managed subspecies in Europe that needed new holders. These will be the first and only ones of their kind in the UK, according to Zootierliste.

That would be Selous' Zebra (Equus quagga borensis) I believe.

It is indeed - Selous' and Maneless were not always considered the same but (like Damara and Burchell's) now usually considered to be one -. E. q. borensis is indeed the correct name. They're rather nice zebras, with Grant-like 'proper' black-and-white striping.

According to Groves, 'manelessness' (that's a mouthful) occurs sporadically in different Zebra populations in parts of East Africa. Possibly the ones in Europe are all Selous? Incidentally, the foals are born with manes which fall out as they get older and then don't regrow. They also have white (unstriped) ears and 'more complicated' tail striping.;) Some genetics at work there no doubt.

It will be a lifetick for me when they arrive, at any rate :) and a nice one, too.

'Maneless' Zebras are somewhat bizarre but no doubt suitable for Colchester who like to be a bit different.

Two of Colchester's Damaras were born at Blackpool, the male from Colchester was born at Manor House. Colchester did have 1.3, so I assume one has died/moved.

It sounds like Manor house are getting 1.2 from Colchester (all they have as they are being replaced) and from Jordan's post just above this, that the male of these is returning where he was born. It will presumably give Manor House 2.3 then?

The Blackpool ones were from Bristol originally.

Yup, this leaves Manor House with 2.3. Very interesting news regarding Selous' Zebra and very good news to say the least! :D

I may be wrong, but I believe all pure maneless zebras in Europe go back to imports of Dvur Kralove from Karamodja district in Uganda. Dvur Kralove keeps a studbook of all "steppe zebras" kept in Czech and Slovak zoos ever, that covers also breeding history of Selous' Zebras including individual old photos, preserved skins etc.

An explanation from Manor House

The Zebra Story: We initially had 2 Damara Zebra - Troy and Zara who were mother & son. Troy went to Colchester and we had Trigger in return, another male. So we basically swapped males.

When our 3 zebra arrived on Wednesday Troy came back with 2 new females Dash & K'Tusha. It was thought that with the 2 males now in the same herd there could be problems and we had extra keepers on duty along with veterinary assistance on standby. But everything seemed to be going swimmingly.

The reason: Family ties create strong bonds and animals can remember & recognise each other. Troy & his mum Zara were reunited. And Trigger was reunited with his original mate Dash, and his daughter with Dash - K'Tusha. Awwww we just were all just so emotional.....

That's one of the two main locations mentioned in Groves(Horses,Asses & Zebras in the Wild) for this 'species'. The other is 'Somalia, along the Juba river.' In the Somali population all adults are maneless, whereas in the Karamoja one, 'some females have manes'. Presumably selective breeding in Europe has changed that so the Zoo ones breed true.

Hamerton, Black Isle, West Mids and Axe Valley also keep Damara's according to Zootierliste

To expand the above somewhat, the matter has been discussed somewhat in the chatroom and of the collections mentioned, Hamerton and Black Isle keep pure Damara, whilst the WMSP and Axe populations are impure Damara - if I recall rightly the WMSP ones have some Chapmans blood and the Axe ones have Grants blood.

By the by, the upcoming arrivals at Colchester will mean the UK will hold every extant subspecies of Plains Zebra, barring the Crawshay's (Equus quagga crawshayi) which is not held in captivity within Europe at present, and has not been for a century.

Excellent news; I've only ever seen maneless zebra at Dvur Kralove so am very pleased that there will be some in England.

Does anybody know when the borensis zebras will be arriving at Colchester?
