Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2014

Is this a definite? Would like to visit over Easter if that's the case!

The opening date has been put back more than once already, so i wouldn't hold your breath!
Having said that, the signs are confidently predicting Easter as Banhamtiger stated and it can't be far from finished from what i saw yesterday.

A new male ostrich arrived from Marwell Zoo on the 25th February- the zoo are currently looking for suggestions for a name.
/QUOTE]

They could have bread their own once, as the enclosure used to have ostrich eggs dotted here and there from time to time.
I asked one of the keepers what they did with them if they incubated any. He said no they just left them, as they had no real use for any more birds.

Personally i have never understood this naming of every thing, except to the keepers what purpose does it serve?

Its got a name already- Ostrich...;) I think naming just allows the public to interact and draws their attention to the Zoo= publicity.

My thoughts exactly Pertinax, then something goes wrong or they are surplus to requirements the personlised critter gets the chop and all hell breaks loose.
I think it is a female thing too, every time anyone shows an interest in the animals I keep or have kept it is always the woman who sounds disappointed when I tell them I don't give them names. The toads for example can't respond, so why bother? I may as well humanise the trees in the garden for all the good it would do.rolleyes:

Great news about the sun bears FINALLY moving in, CZ certainly has its problems when building any major new enclosure with the site!

I think its a man thing NOT to want to name the fluffy little cuddley wuddley animals!
I think its great for adoption packages to have named animals and also Colchester Zoo isn't like any other zoo, they make you feel a part of it so it is a good thing and what is wrong with connecting with the animals on a first name basis they can keep their species as a surname unless they inter marry ;)
My grandson (3) loves telling me about each animal by name (followed by surname) spent an hour telling me about Rajang the Orang utans poo.

I wonder (might be an idea for a post) What on earth a zoo chat built zoo would be like ? Not family friendly I am sure :D

*Well that is good news at last, i promised myself another gold card when they eventually moved in, If i ever have the time to use it is another matter.

*Are you sure you are in Suffolk KZ ? as you sound just like my mother:D

*Oh I can see why they do it, and for children it is great but I feel it leads to anthropomorphism which can then raise all sorts of problems further down the line.

*Your lucky with my nephew it was Thomas the tank engine on what seamed like an endless video loop with his commentary. thankfully he is 25 now and has grown out of it.

*Oh it would be, and well laid out with no financial restraints, people would love to come, but if they or their children miss behaved they could be culled and fed to the carnivores.:p

If I had a zoo, all fluffy little cuddley wuddley animals would be off-show, even ostriches; except for all the gentle lemurs of course.
Children would be allowed, but prams would be banned following the example of the Madagascar exhibit at Cotswold. The no feeding rule would apply to children in all possible ways.

So, were the bears finally on display in their new enclosure? Good news re: Kudu, i can't remember when (if) they last had a male.

The bears are on show in their indoor section and have access to their off show cubing den which is behind the waterfall, the volunteer said they might be allowed outside in a week as they have settled in so well but the keepers are still finishing off outside (weeding and planting grass seed and filling pool up) and the builders are still finishing off.

As for the male kudu i believe they had a old male when they first opened kingdom of the wild.

i am going to the zoo today is there anything that anyone wants me to find out or anything you would like in the gallery.;)
