Yes, but I believe there is an EEP directive to only breed from West Africans, and not others. Is that correct? In which case the provenance of the others might be for interest's sake only.
That could depend on just what levels the other sub-species show up in,or if any of the wild caught Chimps turn out to be naturally occurring hybrids!!

So how many of Chester's 25 strong colony have wild origins? Though of course even zoo bred ones could still be pure but much less chance.

At the moment the zoo hasn't said just what is what with the testing they have done, but from what I have heard it has thrown up a few big questions as to what to do next!

Couple of minor developments:

The Sloth in Spirit of the Jaguar have had their space expanded by means of the installation of several ropes between the walls of the building.

The camel/onager paddock, meanwhile, has been covered with sand.

The sloths were VERY active - for sloths - last time i visited and there were a few keepers around observing them and were talking about altering the lighting and making some changes to their space.

The Boelen's Pythons are not going on show, the keeper said there were problems with the exhibit, so it is to be used for young Komodo Dragons.

2 Belanger's Tree Shrews have been born and a spare maale is in ealm of the red Ape, housed with the Spiny Hill Turtles. There are now 4 African Comb ducks in the Pelican aviary.

The onagers and camels will have access tro the new sand-covered paddock next week.

The baby white-faced saki is a male.

My only regret about this is that the lawn where I have spent plenty of lazy summer afternoons with friends has now been turned into a replica bear pit!

They should have used an actual Victorian bear pit, one can be found in Eastham Country Park on the Wirral, about a 10 - 15 minute drive from Chester Zoo.

A few notes from yesterday:

Miniature Monkeys - still just the pygmy marmosets in the West side, where the windows are still proving very difficult to look through as a result of the condensation. On the East side, the tamarins have now been separated from the Red Titis so that they can no longer see each other, quite a significant step from them being fully integrated a couple of weeks ago.

Asian Forest Tortoises are signposted in the former Rhinoceros Iguana exhibit in Islands in Danger, didn't spot any but a much needed addition considering there is now a lone Lesser Antillean Iguana with the Mountain Chickens. Indochinese Box Turtles are signposted in the former Mexican Beaded Lizard exhibit in Tropical Realm but didn't spot any of these either. Spiny Hill Turtles from RORA have gone off-show, just the Tree Shrew in that enclosure now.

In terms of the aquarium, work continues on the Snake-Necked Turtle tank (there is now some sand and bits of wood), whilst the Secret World of the Okapi tank has been filled with Elephant Nose Fish, despite Long-Finned Characins being seen in the tank earlier in the week.

Hi guys,

a few points from a visit on friday:

the zoo now has a male Lesser Kudu. Don't know when he arrived.
Does anybody know what has happened to the male Rhinoceros Hornbill in Tropical Realm? There was no sign of him....
The sloths were making full use of the new ropes. I have never seen sloths as active in ANY collection!!

The original group that arrived in 2012 was 3.3, with 2.3 remaining at end of 2012 (from annual report).

1.1 died in 2013, and 1.0 was exported and then returned after the death of the male who stayed at Chester.
