Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo - 2014

@Moebelle, just a suggestion by maybe you should put the scientific names for the insects instead of the zoo's common names.

According to the zoos director, Harapan will likely be going to Indonesia to live out his life and possibly contribute to the population.

Zoo director: We won?t stop preserving rare species

I wonder what will replace Harapan and Suci in their enclosures. Personally, I'd move the warty pigs into Suci's old enclosure because of the mud pond and give their current enclosure to an Indian Crested Porcupine or something.

I say move their Warthog to the Warty Pig exhibit since there currently is no space for him. They have an African Crested Porcupine by the way;).

This also leaves one more Sumatran rhino exhibit open for another species.

- I have a few ideas. Firstly malayan tapir's as the sunlight is not good for them the habitats are already covered. They just need a slightly larger pool. Also another species I think could fit is Babirusa. They love the mud like most pig species and would do great in there.

I was going to say move the Przewalskis horses over there since they have a male and female but are currently not allowed to breed due to lack of space. That would mean the shade structures would have no use and tearing them down would be a major waste of money. Tapirs sound like the best way to go (too bad they don't have any).

But I thought they wanted to make this area an Asian exhibit? Hence why they replaced the RRH with warty pigs. And I wasn't referring to the zoo's current porcupines (which I didn't even know they had, where are they exhibited).

I would say move the warty pigs into Suci's enclosure and then bring in a Malayan Tapir for Harapan's.

Personally if I ran things I'd do that and then replace the Emu with a cassowary, put an Indian Crested Porcupine in the warty pig enclosure, and boot the camels, then expand both the Sichuan Takin and Przewalski's Wild Horse yards.

The porcupines are education animals.

They do, but at this time what's the point since the area's and zoo's number one attraction will no longer be there.

- I feel like the zoo should either move the wild horse to a larger exhibit near the indian rhino's (issue is there is no open exhibit) or send them away. They are a herd species and don't do well in a smaller urban enviorment. Most of the breeding of this species occurs in zoo's with multi-acre exhibits like The Wilds, The national zoos conservation center and even the Bronx Zoo. Also is there any preservation on the hoofstock yards holding the camel and wild horse? as wouldn't it be easier to bulldoze them and replace them with a few larger yards.

Well just because the Sumatran Rhinos will be gone doesn't mean they give up on making if an Asian exhibit as they planed.

Not doing so would be like the zoo cancelling Africa! if hippos can't be sourced.

There is no room for expansion for any of the exhibit down there. 20 ft. behind them is Vine Street, and 10 ft. in front of the exhibits is a very tall (70ft.) aviary for birds. The only way the zoo could expand a Wildlife Canyon exhibit is to go left or right and combine paddocks.

I'm actually not concerned for a themed exhibit in that canyon. Since 1877 that area has been reserved for hoofstock from around the world and it has never once had a geographical theme.

- Maybe combining them would be a good idea. Maybe have the current sumatran rhino exhibit, along with exhibits for Sichuan Takin, and Wild Horse. Get rid of the smaller species or move them to other area's of the zoo.

That's what we're saying. Boot the Bactrian Camels and expand the Sichuan Takin and Prezwalski's Wild Horse yards.

Just to clear things up for me, can you please tell me how you would renovate this area by combining the paddocks?

Well first, I would boot the camels. Then, I'd remove the fencing in between the two parts of it. I would then split the current wild horse enclosure by half more or less. The half to the right would be combined with camel and become the new Przewalski's Wild Horse enclosure which would be able to hold more then two animals and maybe the zoo could be put back on the breeding list. The half to the left would be combined with the Sichuan Takin enclosure.

Alright then thank you that makes more sense and sounds like a good plan. However, I would miss the Camels more than the Horses and Takins and they show that they breed very well.

While I agree that the camels may be more charismatic, they're also a domesticated species and thus should go in favor of the actual wild species, one of which is Endangered and has a historical significance for the zoo.

Okay, so this is just an idea, but could the zoo not remove the foliage blocking the old off-show Sumatran Rhino yard from the public eye and then use that for another species? I mean, it's forested and could make for a great edition to the exhibit.
