Blackpool Zoo Blackpool Zoo News 2014

I'm glad that it's a recent thing, not that you've got an incompatible group in such a small space.

I'm a bit disappointed I missed the Orangutan by one week though!

Asian elephant, Marcella has been PTS due to serious health problems. See the zoos Facebook for the full statement....

...and in brighter news, the tiger cubs are confirmed this morning as 2.0

After a visit today and yesterday (And a visit tomorrow too! :D) I thought I'd give a quick update;

- The Orangutan enclosure is fantastic, two on-show indoor areas. The design is a mini version of Chester's and it is brilliant compared to the old enclosure. The male 'Raman' has grown significantly and is now more dominant than 'Victoria'. His cheek pads are slowly getting there, too.

- A new male Red panda has arrived (I believe, however not seen him yet) from another UK collection.

- Tropical Girdled Lizard are no longer on-show and signage has been removed.

- The Tiger cubs were on view today and yesterday after 3.00pm is the best time to see them, from what I've been told.

- The Wolf cubs are looking great, the pack looks more healthier in numbers with these four additions.

- A male Sea Lion pup was born on the 4th July to Isobel. The first pup in two years.

- The two Bactrian Camel calves are now outdoors.

I think that is all the major news, the zoo is looking great. Lots of offspring about, new exhibits being completed all the time.

Scarlet ibis hatched at Blackpool :)

i was going to post about the 28 tortoises but Nisha has already done so, so a little bit of information about the zoo's recent hatching of a scarlet ibis. They hatched 2 in 1977, 1 did not survive.

Only news from today's visit is that one of the female Gorillas, Kena, has died. No further details yet.

Also, it appears a new female Pileated Gibbon has arrived, too. Blackpool now has 2.2.

This one- Kena. She has handraised offspring at both Paignton(males) and Bristol(female), but they were all born at Barcelona before she left. She hasn't bred since being at Blackpool- not sure if that was a deliberate management decision though.

0.0.1 Pileated Gibbon was born earlier this month

I should add to this, this latest arrival is the third one to be born to the pair in the Small Primates house to Ivy and Chamoa. Although, both previous offspring both died. This does bring Blackpool's number of Pileated gibbons up to five which is very nice indeed! :D

Looking at trip advisors top uk zoo's Blackpool features and theres a picture of two of their orang-utans are they as obese as they look?
