Banham Zoo outlines ambitious bio-dome project - Link

Banham Zoo could host its own version of the Eden Project one day, as outlined in a new vision for the establishment’s future.

More details emerged this week for a large biodome environment, under the working title of ‘Germinal’, intended for construction at the Kenninghall Road-based zoo – one of five different zoological projects planned across the UK as part of the ‘New Zoo’ initiative.

Although still in the early conceptual phases, it proposes the biodome would contain a habitat replicating part of the South American rainforest, providing unique opportunities for both visitors and research organisations in the region.

Martin Goymour, chief executive officer of Zoological Society East Anglia, which operates Banham Zoo, said "The ‘New Zoo’ project seeks to move zoos forward in the perception of people, as indeed zoos themselves already have done, making great strides forward and evolving markedly to be coordinated cogs in a much larger, aware and active force.

“I do not know and cannot say whether Germinal will become a reality. I hope that it does so, for all the right reasons, however such a large project, not only in size and cost but also in its implications and connections, will require much nurturing and of course funding.”

Plans have suggested the biodome could serve as a social programme embracing training, volunteering and individual challenge opportunities, and could also be used for bioscience research work, in collaboration with Norfolk Research Park and the University of East Anglia.

Giraffe, Hannah has passed away

Sadly, Hannah, one of our giraffe, died today after a short illness. Our vets were in attendance and she was undergoing a sedation to try and determine the cause of her condition when she passed away. A post mortem was performed and our vets discovered a untreatable problem with her digestive system which was the cause of her recent illness and would, ultimately, have led to her death. It’s obviously been a sad day for our keepers

from their Facebook page:

"We are very sad to announce that our male Sri Lankan leopard, Ruhuna, was put to sleep on Tuesday 20th January following a deterioration in his health. He was over 18 years of age which is an extremely good age for a leopard. Unfortunately, due to his advancing years, his health had started to deteriorate in recent months. He was being closely monitored by his keepers and the veterinary team throughout this time and eventually the difficult decision had to be taken to put him to sleep due to these ongoing age-related health issues.
Ruhuna arrived at Banham with his brother in February 1997, from Cerza Zoo in Normandy where he was born, and during his time with us successfully fathered four cubs which were distributed to other zoos as part of the breeding programme for this species.
Ruhuna is very sadly missed by his keepers and visitors alike."

I remember seeing the two males together in their older housing. It was some years before they partnered him with a female. Hopefully he can be replaced fairly soon.

I was just wondering if the young tigers would still be here with the parents? Would I be right in thinking they'd be moved on at around 2 years old?

Interesting - they are not specifying they will get the same taxon back in time, of course, just that they will get some form of pinniped again.
