San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2014

Betsy (whom I met this morning) is correct; small exhibit by tigers is empty.

Another small exhibit further up Tiger River is also empty for repairs. Workmen were inside and one of the front window panes was shattered.

Also in Tiger River, the fishing cat fencing has been replaced. Instead of harp wire, there is now black mesh. This is actually better because they have removed the plastic sheeting that covered the bottom half of the harp wire in recent years.

Any idea what species normally inhabit that exhibit?

It was a slow loris exhibit for most of the time since the complex opened in 1987. For some reason pygmy marmosets (originally from the children's zoo I think?) were put in there after the loris was vacated.

Sorry David, I meant the other exhibit that AD mentioned, not the pygmy marmoset one. Unless that's what you are meaning and there were two pygmy marmoset enclosures?

Are we referring to the exhibit by the gharial pool? The one that originally held water dragons and used to be an aviary for some kind of pigeon/dove?

Well possibly, I think we need AD to clarify specifically which enclosure was being referred to! :D

Well, I missed a lot not continuing up the that trail. Of course, I backtracked to visit the bonobos.

I don't know what the plans are for the former pygmy maroset exhibit are. I know one of the 2 pygmy marosets died and his brother is off exhibit.

I am not sure what other small exhibit is on that trail. I will check on it next time. I will post what information I can find.

It was a pleasure meeting you Arizona Docent. I'm glad you got some shots of the serval cub. I haven't had a chance to sit down and read your book yet. Just glancing through it looks amazing. Thanks for the autograph!

Nice to meet Betsy in person. (For some reason I thought she was a volunteer, but is not - just a longtime member and fan).

I think the exhibit the workmen were in was the Burmese python. The shattered pane was in an adjoining exhibit that I believe held small birds? There was also a small bird aviary next to the gharial/turtle exhibit in Tiger River that was temporarily empty.

I am friends with lots of keepers, just regular members and volunteers. I have been asked many times to volunteer but honestly I prefer to visit the zoo without the responsibiliy of being an official spokeperson for the San Diego Zoo.

Okay, so let me get this straight. Next to the gharials, the former water dragon and more recently bird exhibit was empty, as well as the former chevrotain and more recently bird exhibit as well as the current python exhibit, AND the most recently pygmy marmoset exhibit?

Yes, I believe that is correct.

As a former zoo docent myself, who is now back to being a regular member, I can tell you that is a wise decision.

A colobus monkey was born on Nov. 21st. Parents are Milo and Lulu.

The article says it is monacled and and not albino because it has blue eyes instead of red. That is the first time I have heard the term monacled used; I would have called it leucisitic.

BTW, the spell correct on my laptop keeps wanting to change monacled to manacled.

Arizonia docent, I think monacled is the species of cobra the snake is and that it happens to be leucisistic in colouring. I dont think monacled is the colouring. But I could be wrong.

monocled cobra is the name of the species, for the ring marking on the hood (likened to a monocle).

are you reading a different article to the one in post #159 by Sunbear12?

Yes. I just clicked on the link and it is a different article than the one I saw before. This article clearly spells out the difference and makes my comment appear as if it was made by an idiot. The article I saw was much shorter and said the snake is monocled, not albino.

No one thought you were an idiot Arizona Docent. I wondered if something in the article changed or if you just misread something. Things like that happen. I left a comment about an article somewhere about animals being able to change species because the totally wrong photo was in the article. They caught it and changed it and no one got my snotty comment. It happens. Writers need to write things correctly the first time.
