Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Future Developments 2014

The Galah was returned to the zoo about six weeks ago, or more. It used to be on display with various others including Major Mitchell's cockatoo. I wish they would bring that species back also.

I never knew the zoo had either species. It would be pretty interesting to have them in that area. It would be pretty interesting to see.

A couple other things I forgot to mention.

The 3 Watusi at the old Giraffe House is a 3 year old mother, 2 year old female calf and 1 year old male calf. The other 2 brought in are in quarantine and a both younger than the mother, who they are not related to.

Also, the Giraffe House was closed, despite the Giraffes being indoors.

The two new watusi arrivals are supposedly males. I would guess the male calf will be transferred at some point or sterilized so he cant breed with his mother. Im not sure if the younger female is the adult females calf or if they are unrelated.

Im looking forward to hearing about the arrival of the eland and wildebeest but thats like not happening until spring... I can be patient.

Shocking find Cypher. A positive article about the zoo and the fact the city is a big part of its problems. Boy I hope the zoo is given the ability to run its self in the future or at least agree to the zoos request to stay out of animal affairs. Whatever convinces the AZA to take the zoo back and gets the zoo some good press finally.

Went to the zoo today. Surprising to see virtually no one else there. I walked around for hours without seeing a single person. Felt weird. Also realized that most people bypass the Eurasia Wilds, almost not realizing it's open.

Tiga was out in the open today, Keeper said she's getting a little more comfortable with the new exhibit and visitors. They're hoping she'll continue to stay out of hiding in the enclosure.

There are 2 Bettongs in the exhibit with the Wallabies and Wombats. Father and Son. They've taken residence in opposite ends of the enclosure. Mother and new Joey (Born September) are still off exhibit, and Keepers are looking into birth control, as they don't want anymore Bettongs due to lack of space to house them.

Keeper also said there are 2 Lionfish in Quarantine. They'll be there for another 2 weeks at least, maybe longer.

It sounds like you had a nice quiet day at the zoo cypher!

I think it's great that the zoo is doing such a good job with its bettongs. It's rare that you'll see a zoo start birth control with a species so uncommon in captivity, but I guess there's no other choice if they're out of space.

The news about the lionfish is also good so the exhibit won't be empty anymore. I've heard that there's still a moray eel in there, but I've still have never seen it.

Also I'm a little surprised that the zoo might have its name changed, but I like that they want to have a bigger focus on conservation and are trying to become more independent.

Cypher will Eurasia Wilds, going to be open everyday now?

The wilds are now offically open to all. The zoo just isnt publicizing it so they can push it for the spring and get the most out of an ad campaign.

One thing I forgot to mention from my visit on Thursday, at the Keeper Talk for the Lions they mentioned talks about introducing carcass feeding for the lions. They would give them a large side of an animal carcass for them to all feed on at the same time. At first they would test this method of feeding off exhibit. If it were to do well, they would do it during Keeper Talks.

It was a pretty mild day, so I took a trip to the zoo. Once again, it was fairly empty. At times I felt like I had the place to myself. Kind of weird, yet relaxing. Anyways, here’s some things I noticed.

The Galah is now in the free flying area, outside of its cage. I find it to be a nice addition with its bright pink colouring.

Aurora is still a no show at the Polar Bear exhibit. So let’s keep our fingers crossed for some cubs.

Noticed an Owl statue in the outdoor Beaver exhibit. I figure there’s a reason for it being there, just not sure what that reason is.

The Canadian Domain opened back up, so I took a trip down there. The Raccoon enclosure has a pretty neat addition for the Raccoons to climb. I’ll post a picture in the gallery.

Grizzly Bears seem too officially be off exhibit for their hibernation.

Also, I spoke with a Keeper at the Bison and Wolves. He said there is a plan to move the young wolf pack in the Domain up to the Tundra Trek. It’ll most likely happen after the breeding season which is usually January to April. He said there was definitely breeding last year winter, and everyone was surprised that there were no cubs. He also mentioned that there are no plans to get more Wolves, especially since they’re hoping for cubs. With the Wolves making dens in the exhibit, there’s no telling when cubs can pop up.

Fun fact, when the monorail was still active, the large Arctic Wolf exhibit (now not accessible to the public) contained 30+ Wolves. The pack got so big that the wolves dividend themselves into 4 separate packs.

The pond in the Domain has been drained for restoration purposes. Pretty weird seeing it drained.

At the Cheetah talk the Keeper mentioned that the hormone results for the Cheetah’s came back showing no pregnancies. Keepers are still hopeful, as the test results aren’t 100% accurate. It did after all say Twiga was not pregnant, yet now we have Mstari.

Giraffe House was open today. It’s expected to be open for the rest of the winter, unless something is scheduled for it to be closed.

Also, the Watusi will be moving to the Horse barn in Eurasia for the winter, once the 2 young males finish quarantine. Once they are out of the Giraffe House, they are hoping to start construction of the new Watusi housing by first tearing down the Giraffe House.

Thanks for the updates cypher.

The news about the wolves sounds great. It'll be nice to see the younger more active pack in the Tundra Trek exhibit, especially if there are babies.

I don't understand what the point was of having the watusi off exhibit in the giraffe house for a few months if they're now moving to another barn. Anyways, I'm glad that the old giraffe house is being torn down and I hope the new barn will be great.

Yeah, quite a few Keepers were puzzled by the decision of bringing the Watusi to the Giraffe. It was virtually pointless. They never went on exhibit, so what was the point of moving them.

The zoo has posted an interactive map for winter 2014. Although there seems to be a mistake on it. For some reason, Wrinkled Hornbills are listed as a species living in the African Rainforest Pavilion. Here is a link to the map if you want to check it out: Toronto Zoo | Winter

Noticed an Owl statue in the outdoor Beaver exhibit. I figure there’s a reason for it being there, just not sure what that reason is.

A lot of time fake owl statues will be used to keep away animals that can become a nuisance such as rabbits, chipmunks, and squirrels.

Despite the abundant amount of snow, I decided to take a trip to the zoo. My brother and I only ran into 1 other person that wasn’t a Keeper. So needless to say, it was a quiet day.

My walkthrough of the Savanna was an utter waste of time. Only the Hyena (Pinduli) was out. Lions were a no show, although there were traces of them having been in the snow. Cheetahs were also not out, and there was no keeper talk for them. There were no indications that they were ever out.

My highlight of the day was watching the Gorillas early morning. When I got there they were just let into the main exhibit to get some food that was placed around for them. It was the only time I saw Charles somewhere besides his usually spot out of sight. He was walking around the enclosure near the back window eating.

At one point Sadiki and Josephine got into a huge fight, in which Ngozi got involved with. The screaming was loud and kind of terrifying to hear. There was hitting, grabbing and attempted biting. Charles ran into the middle of it, let out a loud grunt, and everything stopped. They all went back to their normal routines like nothing happened. It was an amazing sight to see. Never knew Charles can move so quickly. 3 Keepers came running out to see what the commotion was. They said they’ve never heard screaming like that before. The whole ordeal must’ve lasted 5-10 seconds.

Also, in other news, the Zoo believes Er Shun is not pregnant. You can read more about here:

I also noticed that the zoo has removed the Cute Alert, which hadn’t been updated since 2012.
