1.1 green araçari Pteroglossus viridis are onshow on the upper level of the Tropical House.

The Luzon scops owl Otus longicornis is on show in the end aviary (upper level) but is very difficult to spot.

I believe its luzon lowland scops otus megalotis not longicornis. Megalotis is the former phillipine scops before recent taxonomic splits

Are there only 2 male black rhinos at Chester now? could only find Kifaru and Magadi. Am I right in saying thay Kifaru was Sammi's replacement after i think he went to Port Lympne. Is it fact that Asani has died? I was at the zoo the day of his birth.

They are the only adult males,cannot remember what the sex of the calfs are so 1 of them could be a male!Kifaru was brought in as another male,but not becasue of Sammy going to PL,as he could well return in the future to Chester!

Yes Asani has died at PL!

Good proven Black Rhino bulls are at a bit of a premium in the UK at present. Apart from Magadi at Chester and Kingo at Port Lympne, I don't know which others have fathered calves (one for Sammy at Chester?). The male PL replaced Kingo with at Paignton has not so far bred there. And it appears the one at Howletts has yet to father a calf too.

Forgot some important news from yesterday, epaulette shark (Hemiscyllium ocellatum) on show in the Aquarium.

Yes, so it is. Bulls need to be more aged / mature than their female conspecifics / intended partners.

Not twins - born to different mothers within a week of one another.

Correction - the two spider monkeys were born three weeks apart, the first on March 6th and the second on March 27th. Not sure why I thought otherwise.

So, my parents have allowed me a short break from studying for upcoming exams, so i'll be at the zoo tomorrow. My list of new things to see is;
Scops owl and aracaris in the tropical realm
green jays in with macaws
Baby spider monkeys
epaulette sharks in the aquarium
Revamped parrot breeding centre

Has anything else happened since the end of february?

a new British sea life tank in the aquarium.

Landscaping of some Tropical house aviaries.

Tsavo aviary getting a new roof. Probavly not finished yet.

Okay, a few things from today's visit;

The aquarium in the elephant house is currently very heavily stocked with tiger barbs and scissortail rasbora as well as the usual giant danios.

There is no sign up for the Luzon lowland scops owl yet, most people didn't seem to realize it wasn't an empty aviary.

The parrot breeding center was closed for routine maintenance

No sign of the epaulette sharks in the aquarium, however 3 tanks (long-finned characins, snowflake foral & flag tailed grouper, and the end tank that last year held lake Zacapu salamander) were completely empty.

There was a small flock of what looked like ruddy shelduck in the off display area behind the wetland bird aviary/waterbird nursery.

That's quite understandable considering two very experienced zoochatters went recently and still managed to miss it even after I told them it was in there.
