The zoo also kicked off its 50th anniversary lately, with Governor Charlie Baker visiting. The zoo has also rented out 2 Asian Elephants from Have Trunk Will travel for the summer.

The Zoo has no information on the website (that I could find) about the elephants, rides, cost, etc. Nor do they have photos on facebook or instagram of Tai and Rosie. Not even a blurb on Facebook. Someone did tag them in a post with a photo of our Governor, Rosie and Tai. But that's it. **Correction** I did find one photo that someone uploaded to their page under that album. Strange, no? I thought they smartened up and sent the cows packing. Wrong. On instagram, searching southwickszoo under hashtag, there they are! Tagged photos of people riding on the cows while the cows wear some floral headpiece. Funny. They remove all infor, share no photos, yet reap the funds of those visiting. Slick. Way to go, Southwick's. Way to go....

I think they view the cows as “rented", as they came after their season started. All for their fiftieth anniversary. The “Zoo" took down their review section. I wonder why?
 
im happy to see elephants at least one more time at the zoo. Considering Southwicks is the best zoo in New England and the long history of having elephants on grounds I hope they continue it in the future. Both Southwicks and Have Trunk are part of the ZAA so I have hope

They're not exhibited. Maybe during their “break" from giving rides being chained at the ankle and medicated. HTWT uses hooks and those electric wands to get the animals to do what they want. If Southwick's was so proud why did they tout them coming for the anniversary and now nothing is on the website nor have they shared any photos on social media? They received backlash for it. Removed content. Even the “likes" on their facebook page is down according to the faceback statistic. If you click on it, it says down seventeen point whatever percent.
 
Unfortunately with the ignorance of the public and the propaganda from activists I don't blame them for not advertising it. This is the day and age we live in. Places like Have Trunk take much better care of their elephants than most zoos. The traveling and exercise(rides and performances) are much more enriching than tires, boomer balls and hay nets. It is why working elephants live well past life expectancy than zoo elephants.
 
And considering Southwicks exhibits and health care is far above those at RWP, Franklin Park, Beardsley etc. I don't know why reviews would be down.
 
I was at the Zoo recently. Tai and Rosie were there giving rides; they looked well. They were doing steady business but they had a lot of breaks. At any given time there was a 1 in 3 chance that one of them would be eating hay under a tent by my estimate. I did not see any restraints and at one point towards the end of the day Tai was walking around the ride area on her own looking out over the rocks that were surrounding it, as if she were curious about what was going on outside. The handlers had the ankus but I never saw it used. I'm just reporting what I saw.

The Grevy's Zebras have been replaced by Grant's Zebra's, I don't know when this happened. Apparently the Grevy's were picking on the other species in the field. They thought the Grevy's would grow out of it but they did not.

There is a new Baby Giraffe, her name is Timber.
 
A private zoo getting shipments/imports of an animal seen only in European collections in the Western World. I'm extremely impressed :). I'm gonna have to visit again soon.
