South Lakes Wild Animal Park South Lakes news thread 2015

"Sarah McClay, who died at South Lakes Safari Zoo in Dalton in May 2013, studied at the University of Cumbria's Newton Rigg campus - and graduated in July 2010 with a BSc (Hons) degree in animal conservation science.

The university created a memorial award in her honour and during a graduation ceremony in Carlisle yesterday it was presented to Liam Thompson by her brother Stephen McClay, mum Fiona McClay and partner David Shaw.

Reasonably sure that if you've linked the article you don't need to post the entirety of the text as well :p I've edited your post somewhat.

Elephants

The park have posted a photo of two African Elephants onto there Facebook page with the caption "coming soon" ...

Why do I feel slightly concerned by this development?

It may just be the grassy land the Elephants are standing on? ;)

Says nothing about Eles! :p

Where are they going? Only assume the rhinos and giraffe are staying where they are? Or are they using the old African area for them?

Cant believe this news hasn't been widely condemned by the usual "South lakes/David Gill appreciation society"

Joking apart though,i for one feel concerned by the news/hint of them getting Elephants. After my one and only visit I was pretty appalled by the state of the Rhino's winter quarters and the giraffes weren't much better. The soil and location of South lakes really doesn't suit large grazing animals in the winter. I hate to imagine what an Elephant enclosure would look like up there after a winter or 2. I hope they finish developing what they have started before they even think about even looking into Elephants. Some of the recent reports on Trip advisor are horrendous. I just hope they get their act together before embarking on another expansion.

Dave Gill has posted:

"After 21 years as sole Director of the zoo with my future plans changing dramatically recently the company is developing with a smooth transition being made. We recently appointed 2 new Direcors to the operating company in Christina Fischer who is now Director of Animal Management and Frieda Rivera Schreiber who is Director of Veterinary Management respectively. I have dropped back now to do what I always said I would continue to do as my passion... Director of Conservation. Further appointments to the Board of Directors is expected next week. with the Safari Zoo exceeding all expectations and growth projections so far in 2015 and the need to expand and develop further the company needs to spread its load and use its talents fully."

With the Court Case being heard on the 27 August 2015 at Furness Magistrates Court regarding Dave Gill, then it would be highly unlikely that Dave Gill with all his ego ad chest beating and chest puffing, would be allowed to keep elephants and would have to show that he and his park could keep such animals within the rules and laws rather than continually break them. Also, I did mention the image may be a stock photo, rightfully pointed out by Weare2 that the picture could one of Gill's. However, Gill has in the past used stock images, he is also photographed riding his own white rhino in South Lakes. Again this would and should be pointed out to the council that keeping elephants by Gill would be foolish.

I have merged and edited your two posts to make them more legible, and to make clear which parts were your opinion, which were news articles and which were Gill's words.

If you were to do this kind of thing yourself, I think your opinions would come across better and without giving the impression of merely re-posting content found elsewhere :)

Thanks, my error on this and well pointed out. ;)

How do you know it is a stock picture? As mr gill has said on his Facebook page he has just been in safari in Africa so it could be one of his own. A silly gill bashing comment again....

Have corrected the image issue however, your comment regarding "silly gill bashing" is fractious.

Any news on the court case today?

Nothing thus far has been in the news, newspapers and internet. There is an unlikely chance of hearing anything until the end diet.

Differences between England and Scotland

If a publication is drawn to a Judge”s attention which creates a substantial risk of serious prejudice the Judge will decide if there is a prima facie case of contempt to answer.

In most cases, unlike in England, the Editor and journalist will require to attend Court the next day to argue the issue.

Likewise in Scotland you are not allowed to use any form of communication aid and this includes texts, emails etc. https://scotslawthoughts.wordpress....-problem-with-tweeting-from-a-scottish-court/

May be there will be the odd piece about the case in the North West Evening Mail over the next number of days, who knows.

Went today off a visit. David was hard at work digging a ditch around the current bear enclosure? The bears were locked inside and not happy, physically banging on the door. Though the new bead and spider monkey enclosure looks good but not finished till October. Would make more sense to finish the new enclosure and move them before they dig up the old one!

No new work in the new African house? Have a feeling that elephants are going there now instead of giraffes and rhino like the original plan was.

Female tigers out. Don't think they have been mixed with Padang yet.

Also no sign of a lion cub though they were inside part of the time due to rotation of the two males.
