South Lakes Wild Animal Park South Lakes news thread 2015

I'd expect there will be a lot of empty enclosures that they fill over the next year or so, gorillas and orangutans are meant to be coming in, can't see a sudden influx of new species being added over the next month, would be a logistical nightmare... be interesting to see what is there when he opens the expansion in a month.

Not necessarily. There have been new arrivals in the new extension for a while but have been off show. For example the zebra have been off show for a year! The bears and spider monkeys are moving onto the new site and they have extended the walk about area. There's also a farm area and playground. Some of the new extension areas have been open for a while as they have completed parts.

Some zoo news from their Facebook page - all 3 female white rhinos have been mated successfully , twin snow leopard cubs are being reared by mother Kadi , 35 lemurs born in 2015 of which 20 are ring-tailed .

Some updated pictures on David Gills facebook page of the new expansion. Any idea when it's all opening?

BARROW council officials have confirmed they are to prosecute South Lakes Safari Zoo in Dalton and its boss David Gill in connection with the death of a staff member killed by a tiger.

Sarah McClay: Died after attack by tiger
Barrow Borough Council announced this afternoon it is to prosecute for alleged breaches of health and safety law.

It follows the conclusion of the council’s investigation into the death of 24 year old zoo keeper Sarah Louise McClay on 24 May 2013.

On that day Sarah Louise McClay suffered fatal injuries as a result of being attacked by a Sumatran tiger.

In addition, Barrow Borough Council has commenced a prosecution in respect of alleged breaches of health and safety law following an incident in July 2014 when a zoo keeper fell from a ladder while preparing to feed big cats.

There will be a further prosecution against both the South Lakes Safari Zoo Ltd and its director Mr Gill regarding an alleged failure to comply with two improvement notices, served by Barrow Borough Council.

The proceedings commenced against South Lakes Safari Zoo Ltd are for the alleged failure to discharge its duties under Section 2 (1), 3 (1) and 21 of the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 ("The Act") and Regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety Work Regulations 1999.

The same offences are alleged in relation to Mr Gill in his capacity of director of the company, in line with the provisions contained within section 37 of The Act.

The initial court date has been set for 27 August 2015 at 1.45pm at Furness Magistrates' Court, Abbey Road, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

The prosecution of Mr David Gill and South Lakes Safari Zoo Ltd in relation to these incidents is now a matter for the Court.

Barrow Borough Council is unable to comment further on the decision to prosecute.

He has not as of yet commented on his own page. After putting the plastic or fibre glass tiger on the tiger house where she died and then making the comment "This gave the keepers a bit of a shock yesterday morning !! part of all the new displays for the new Safari Zoo. There are tigers lions bears hippos and many more all around the zoo to enjoy." The man has not got a clue....

New entrance opens tomorrow. Will make a big difference for accessibility off the main road instead of having to drive right through Dalton

The discussion has been locked as it is an ongoing legal matter and liable to cause problems for the site if we comment on the matter without caution. As such it is best we avoid discussion of the matter in this thread, too.

Caution and respect should be given to the due course of the legal workings and to the late Sarah's family and friends, and I give way to posting any further comment. When the case is closed, then may be we can have say but until then, my respect to all.

Before all the david gill bashing starts I past it earlier and it was a dead badger by the road so not a lemur. Went to the zoo today and looks really good with the new entrance etc.

I feel for the staff and though escapees do happen, the staff must be in a deep low and not just because of the escapee but because of the ongoing issues with Dave Gill. First and foremost, I do hope the Lemur is found and the staff can get back to their duties without fear. Given the amount and speed of pace of change with the new opening and areas, errors do happen. However, let us not distract from the fact that South Lakes has more animal escapes and incidents than any other animal collection within the UK. We can be assured that Dave Gill will blame the staff and or the local council, the stress of the up and coming court case etc. as that is his M.O. Questions do have to be asked regarding why there are so many animal incidents, escapes and other problems, in the meantime, wishing the staff the best and hope they catch the Lemur and without any further issues.

The original article said someone had thought they spotted a lemur and rang the zoo. It turned out that it was a badger not a lemur. There isn't a lemur missing.

Which is some ways worse as surely the keepers should know how many lemurs there are in the park, then all it will require is a head count, problem solved.
