South Lakes Wild Animal Park South Lakes news thread 2015

Just wondering, does anyone know whether the two other tigers South Lakes are receiving are Amur? Or are they getting two more sumatrans? I can't understand why Gill is housing a couple while another two are out- especially after the digs at the council about him having to have Nina/Kadi/Snow Leopards alternating with the lions and moaning about how he wanted them to have their OWN enclouser, seems odd

There's an urgent need for new EEP holders of Sumatran Tigers due to the "baby boom" in the past few years. Any additional spaces with existing holders are likely to be very welcome

New female Sumatran tiger arrived today. Now 1 male and 2 females. A few more to come as well according to his Facebook page!

I don't hear much about wildebeest on the UK forums. Which species would these ones be?

According to ztl all the animals in the UK are still considered Connochaetes taurinus.

From the photo I saw of these animals they look the same as well.

Incorrect; there are some Connochaetes gnou knocking around too.

are you talking about the Groves' splits? I don't think you're going to get much support from other authoritative sources for splitting taurinus.

They certainly do not get the support from Jonathan Kingdon, the godfather of African mammals. In his new Field Guide to African mammals he basically states that some idiots have done an over-zealous application of the PSC: "thus small founder-effects can elevate tiny, labile populations to rank as full species regardless of their ecology, behaviour and boom-and-bust dynamics that influenced their distinctiveness". Then he goes on about that this PSC is only done in museums and not in the field.

The point he makes is quite clear and I personally hope that this PSC madness is soon over anyway and that these researchers learn to incorporate PSC into other species concepts, although they still state in their books that PSC is the only widely applicable species concept....

[QUOTE Chlidonias;883054]I don't hear much about wildebeest on the UK forums.

That's because there aren't very many here nowadays;

Newquay and the Lakeland Wildlife Park(not South Lakes) have Black Wildebeest.

Port Lympne and I think all the four English safari parks have Brindled or White bearded Gnu and now at South Lakes too- that is about it. Only Port Lympne has a decent-sized herd at present . I would really like to see one or other species return to Whipsnade too.

There are, sadly, no White-bearded (C. t. albojubatus) left in the UK - only the nominate subspecies.

I'd love Wildebeest to return to Whipsnade too - for preference the aforementioned White-bearded, as I've never seen that taxon! But any taxon would be a great addition to the collection.

At Whipsnade I would like to see them in the paddock between the Lions and the Hippos- I can't remember its name but it houses Scimitar horned Oryx. I sort of presume(or remember?) this is where they were kept formerly but I could be completely wrong on that. Any other suitable paddock at Whipsnade would do of course...:)

That will be a lot of animals in the African area. Giraffe, rhino, zebra, wilder beast and they have antelope as well!

And don't know whether they are moving the baboons or not?

"Todays big news.... we have Snow Leopard cubs born this morning !!"
- I wonder how long these will live for, given that the otter pups passed away and other animals of late -

Pictures of new African area on Facebook. Looks really good however it says giraffe and rhino won't be moving until next spring.

Yes, Gill has commented saying it will be open to the public in the next few weeks but it won't have rhino and giraffe moving as they're still working on housing - anyone know what new animals to expect moving in in the next few weeks?
